Hi,

I had trimethoprim (sorry no idea how to spell that!) But only enough for 5 days for some reason. Think it was 200mg. Anyway i finished the course and 2 days later i am getting the symptoms back!! Is it likely that the course was too short or the wrong strength? Or is that the norm for UTI treatment? Ive never had one before..I had a section 4 weeks ago and have noticed that after going to the loo there is a little spot of pinky red blood on tissue..is this really bad? (major health anxiety going on ) Other symptoms i have are occasional sweats and slight burning on urination. Not as bad as before the antibiotics. Symptoms went away while i was taking them.

Am drinking lots of water and waiting for results of sample sent off today. Will it do any harm having this infection for another couple of days until i get the results and more antibiotics?? Just worrying because of my wound, its healed nicely and dont want to risk getting an infection there!!

Thanks for reading.

go back to GP- you might be resistant to Trim. It is the first type given and is cheap- you can ask for another kind such as Cipro or Nitrofurantin which are stronger.

My DD has has a series of UTIs over the last year. The medicine that worked best was nitrofurantoin. It does sound like your course was not strong enough, not long enough, or you are resistant.

Good luck. A UTI is no fun!

Thankyou thankyou!! Will ask the doctor about being resistant and the other antibiotics then. It really is horrid isn't it!

Also look at the NICE guideline if you want to know what the GP should be doing.

Poor you -really sympathise . I had an awful UTI in September that trimethoprim didn't touch, but once on nitrofurantoin like Stix's DD, it started to clear up pretty quickly. Now that a sample has been sent off, the path lab should be able to identify exactly what abx should hit it on the head. Hope you feel better soon

Have suffered from cystitis my whole adult life, so sympathise, UTIs are awful.

With my worst bout a few years ago they didn't get the antibiotics right til the urine sample came back - I started on the most common which was OK to take if pregnant - was TTC at the time so couldn't be sure. If you can cope til you get your results, once you get the right drug it usually clears quickly.

I'm sure your wound will be fine (had two of those too!) - just keep everything nice & clean

Thankyou! Im glad i know about the other antibiotics now, if the doctor doesn't suggest the stronger one i will ask him about it

Well im still drinking loads of water and its not burning anymore but i know its still there DD is losing patience with me having to keep going to the toilet every 2 mins!

thanks for replying.

Good luck - the other ABs aren't stronger as such, just more appropriate for whatever bacteria is lurking
