Bloody cough - do I need to bother the Dr?

I have had a cough since I had flu in early December. I saw the dr last week about something else and she made a jokey comment about my cough, when I asked her if there was anything I could do about it she said it was probably just viral and come back in a few weeks if it hadn't cleared up. I don't have a cold although I do have a little congestion.

My cough is getting worse, everyone at work looks horrified everytime I start coughing and tells me to get to the dr, it is productive and comes from the chest. Sometimes the coughing is so persistant that I cannot breathe and my vision closes in IYKWIM.

I am reluctant to go back to the dr so soon after her comments last week but I have had this now for at least seven weeks and I am sick to death of it. What do you think?

Yes, I'd go back. If it's chesty and hasn't improved (in fact has got worse) it may be an infection.

Definitely go back.

Thanks everyone, I will make an appointment and at least get her to listen to my chest this time!

I went to the Doctors today with a cough just like that. I have antibiotics for a chest infection. I'll be fine in a few days though but have been wiped out for a week before when I've ignored similar and ended up with two lots of antibiotics, steroids, anti puke tablets and then canesten to deal with the effects!

Go to the Docs ASAP.

Ooh blimey now you're worrying me Mugglewump!

I hate going to drs as I always feel a bit of a fraud for some reason, like I'm wasting their time but I think they often make you feel like that which puts me off going when I should.

I usually wait until I have chest pains and a temp too and am struggling for breath then like I said, end up wiped out for a week. I did wonder if I was wasting the doctor's time today, but obviously not. Besides, the nurse at work (Care Home) told me to go as I sound awful.

I'll be fine in a day or two, it's nothing serious and you should go too before it gets worse as then it'll be harder to treat.
Just ask for Canesten at the same time as they give you the AB's!

Have made an appointment for this afternoon. Will have to make sure a cough all over her when I go in just to make sure she appreciates how horrible it is!

OK update, been to docs and have a chest infection. I am now on antibiotics and an inhaler! She did not prescribe the Canesten!

Thank you all for taking the time to respond and for pushing me into going. Hopefully will be on the mend in a few days.
