Mirena Coil - think I have gone off the idea - appt tomorrow

Supposed to be having a mirena coil fitted tomorrow and am in a bit of a stress about the whole thing. First of all I think I have messed things up anyway as I forgot to take a swab to check for infections - is this necessary? Am wondering if they would go ahead anyway?

Secondly I think I am having doubts. Have been reading on here about peoples bad experiences (not to mention people falling pregnant ).

I must admit I have never been that keen on the idea of having it inside me but what are the alternatives? We are not planning anymore children.

I just have not had 5 minutes to really sit down and think about it - when the doctor phoned to discuss DD wet hereself and DS started screaming so could not really concentrate!

Anyone else change their mind about the coil and what did you go for instead?

I had one fitted last October and it is great. I have no bleeding and happily know likelihood of more children very small.

Think I was swabbed at the time of insertion for any infections.

Procedure itself wasn't exactly pleasant (are you able to go on your own, but have someone drive you afterwards) but it didn't last very long, and then only had cramps for about 24 hours afterwards.

I am really glad I had it as I was on the pill which I kept forgetting to take, which wasn't a great contraceptive method.

i have a mirena and have had one for nearly 5 years, will have another in july when this one is up for replacement. have had no problems with it at all, also i didn't find it hurt having it fitted either. when it went in, i did have a few months of bleeding on and off, but that settled down and since then, just the odd bit of spotting, thats all.

Mine was an unmitigated NIGHTMARE and it took me 10 months to convince them to take the damn thing out!

DH had the snip.

I had mine fitted in march. Was lightly bleeding for a few months after, but has now setteled down and I have regular periods which are very light. {one of the main reasons I got in in was because my periods were so heavy after having dd}.

My mum and sister have it too and are happy with it. I also started a thread on here today saying I think my sex drive is higher because of it. So I am pretty happy with it. But have not heard anything about people getting pregnant on it, so will have a look at that...

Mine was a nightmare too, I'm afraid. I'm giving my body a break at the moment (after four years of Mirena hell), but I would opt for a copper coil next time.

Having said that, lots of women get on fine with the Mirena. If you don't get the nasty side effects, it's a completely hassle-free method of contraception.

I've had mine in and not had any problems. It's a bit odd not knowing when I'm going to be bleeding (but only very light bleeding now) but apart from that I've been OK and reckon I'll keep mine the full 5 years.

I had some painkillers left over from my c-section so I took those as advised before having it put in and didn't feel a thing.

Had mine since April, been fine except that the strings have disappeared and I went for a scan to check if it was still in

Apparently its still there.

Can't take my favourite pill as breastfeeding so it seemed worth a try. Take painkillers just before you go as its quite sore after.
