In late October, when I was 38 weeks pregnant, my 3 year old DD came down with suspected swine flu (later confirmed by lab tests). She was put on Tamiflu as a precaution. The next day, I started having flu symptoms, although fairly mild, and went to a walk in clinic. They gave me Tamiflu as well. Over the next three days I went to the A& E three times with worsening symptoms (pain in my chest and back, chills etc) and was given stronger pain killers and sent home. The third day my husband brought me back because I was no longer coherent and could not breathe. I did not regain consciousness for 4 weeks. They did an emergency c-section when we got to the hospital because the baby was in distress. DD3 was born unresponsive and not breathing and was rushed to a neonatal unit for a brain freeze (did not need it as she recovered quickly). I have no memory of her birth and apparently immediately after I was sent to the ICU in a coma. I had developed double pneumonia from the swine flu and was put on a ventilator. My organs began to fail after a few days and my family flew in from around the world as they did not think I would pull through. After 4 weeks in the ICU I regained consciousness although I have lost parts of both lungs. I spent another two weeks in the hospital in recovery. I saw my new baby only once and my other two DD twice as they got upset seeing me with tubes all over and I couldn't talk to them because of the ventilator. My mother in law came to stay to take care of DD3 and even now (DD3 is 10 weeks) I still cannot look after her on my own as I have had complications from the treatment and the recovery is slow. However, I am lucky and grateful to be alive and my entire family got the vaccine. DD1 and DD2 now only occasionally mention the six weeks Mummy was away but I still have work to do to bond again with DD3.
