Why are some periods heavier than others?

Sorry if this is a really stupid question, but I often find that some months, my periods are fairly light and others (like this month) quite heavy. I knew it would be heavy because my boobs were incredibly sore and I was unusually emotional. Is it to do with age do you think? I am 43. Why should cycles vary so much from one month to another?
