Please help allay my fears, had a mammogram where they found something 'not right' - asked me to return asap for an ultrasound and Biopsy. Anyone know how long these things take and what they entail, feeling a bit emotional.

Hello. No experience or advice, just wanted to say that I hope everything is ok.

My sister had a mammogram just before Xmas and we're still waiting for the results.

Sorry you've had such frightening news. I would think they'll bring you back to the next available clinic, so only a few days. The ultrasound scan uses the same equipment as an antenatal scan, so some jelly on your breast then running a probe over the top to try and identify the area that they may have seen on the mammogram.

If they can see anything there, they will either take a needle sample, using a syringe, or take a small tissue sample from the area, using a special biopsy tool. They give you local anaesthetic for the second of these, make a small nick in the skin and take the sample with the biopsy tool. it's a very small nick and doesn't need stitches or anything like that.

The tissue sample is then sent to the lab for analysis and results come back usually within a week, you would normally be seen back at a clinic to discuss them with a breast surgeon (even if results are reassuring you may be called to a surgical clinic, it doesn't mean you need to have an operation)

HTH.

Also, there are lots of people called back for further assessment after mammos who have reassuring further tests, so hopefully you will be one of these.

Thank you both, the speed of it all has knocked me a little sideways but thanks for your encouragement,

Hello

I had an ultrasound and biopsy. It didn't take long at all (well if you don't include the bit in the waiting room).

They ask you to take off all your clothes from the waist up and change into a gown, you have a cubicle to change in.

Then waited in waiting room in the lovely gown

Had ultrasound of breast which is just like ultrasound when you're pregnant, with the gel and prodding around with sensor thingy. You can't see the screen. They do the biopsy at same time as ultrasound (so they can see they're getting the right bit) - it's a needle inserted into your breast to collect a few cells - painful, but honestly not too bad.

I had to get changed back into my clothes and wait in waiting room or my results - I got them in about half an hour.

Luckily mine was just a cyst.

Good luck
