Dry cough remedies?

I know this must have been covered but cannot find in search... Both DH & DS (10) have dry coughs - aftermath of flu/bad colds least week and cannot seem to shake off. I don't get coughs so am at a loss,e xcept i remebre the GP telling met aht cough medicine does not work....
If anyone has any ideas how to make them more comfortable, ould be eternally grateful....

At night put boiling water by the bed with carvol/ulbus oil in to help dampen the air so not to agrevate the cough. Don't let the bedroom get too hot with the central heating as it can make it worse. Wet towels on radiators if heat required?
