The pill for really long periods?

Since having kids, my periods regularly last for 10/14 days, with normal bleeding for the first 6/7 days then a runoff for the last few days. Cycle is still 28 days. My doctor has suggested I go on the pill for a few months to see if this settles them down but as I am now in my 40s I am a bit reluctant to go back on the pill, also I am sure to forget! She said the coil would more likely have breakthrough bleeding.
Has anyone used the pill for this problem, did it work and how long were you on it for?
Thanks,

I have been having a similar problem since I had ds nearly two years ago. I have been having light bleeding for a few days, then extremely heavy for three days then light again for another few days (lasting about 10 days in total). Finally went to docs last week and she said that it might be a cervical erosion. She wants to do an internal next week but then will refer me to hospital to have a cauterisation. Apparently, this is to rule out that there is nothing more serious wrong as if the problem doesn't right itself after this procedure it might require more investigation. Did your doc suggest anything like this?

No, she didn't but she did have a quick look "up there" and had a feel about!
