3.6 year old making "whooping" sound but not while coughing - what could it be?

DS had chicken pox a few weeks back, followed by a mild cold and cough, and then a fever with no other symptoms.

He is now coughing a very little bit now and then, but the main thing is that a lot of the time he is just either clearing his throat or taking a sharp intake of breath which sounds exactly like the "whoop" that's supposed to come at the end of a whooping cough fit (googled it!).

He seems perfectly well otherwise and it doesn't sound like asthmatic wheezing (so says dp, who has asthma). Any ideas?
