Very, very heavy period - first after having IUD fitted

Now I expected my periods to be heavier for a few months after having the IUD fitted, but not this much heavier!

CD1 - not very much loss. This is normal.
CD2 - Heavy flow that is normal for me. I use a mooncup and it was overflowing within 2h until early afternoon, then the loss slowed. Again, that's normal. I usually have two or three quieter days after this heavy gush but...
CD3 - same as CD2. Now given up on mooncups and had to go and buy emergency super pads which are only lasting 2h. Bleeding slowed again in the afternoon.
CD4 - same again! I'm beginning to feel a little bit weak, as well as fed up of going to the loo all the time, and also aware I may have to go and buy more pads soon.

Thankfully I've got very little pain, but ought I to be worrying about this? I've looked up 'heavy periods' and they say that means more than 80ml in total - I think I must have lost about two or three times as much as that already

Any thoughts?

i've been exactly the same since having coil fitted. only used mooncup after i'd had the coil, so half wondered if they just weren't as good as tampax. day 2 and3 for me i Have to go to the toilet every 2hours,or elseb its a blood bath, and have got to the stage that i worry about where i'm going to be on those days.

i phoned doctor to try to get a mirena instead, but couldn't get an appointment with the doctor trained to do them - have to wait until end of jan now.

my doctor also asked about pain, which had for my first few periods, but not the next two, so i said i didn't have any. later i could hardly stand when out shopping with a sudden cramp.

i find that when i had mirena coil, i had heavy periods for 8 months and then i stopped having periods all together. i loved it but my breasts were permantly sooo sore so im now on copper coil, which i was starting to get worried for the first few months thinking I'll have no blood left inside cos i was on sooo heavy. Now im on my 6th month and it getting alot lighter - more like a watery red colour.

FlamingoBingo · 12/12/2009 14:08

That's both reassuring. It's not the mirena - I don't want the hormones. I'll just have to find some tips with coping with this for a few months, in that case, rather than worrying that I'm about to die from blood loss!

Mine was very heavy the first month, but quite quick. They got pretty much back to normal in 3 months ish. I wouldn't worry too much, just try to rest and keep iron levels up.

biglips · 12/12/2009 16:34

take iron tabs and also if you do get a crampy tummy, take please read the ingredients if you are allergic to any

Ok, how long should I leave this before I go to the doctor about this? More heavy bleeding again today . That's four days in total. It kind of slows and then starts again for a good few hours, and this pattern hasn't changed for four days now.

Oh FFS! NHS Direct website says bleeding so you're soaking through a pad more than every 3h means you should go to A&E

Right, please can someone who has heavy periods normally advise me here! I am not used to this! I'm not weak, shaky, in pain, just bleeding and bleeding and bleeding!

Needing to change pads every 2 or 3 hours for about 10 hours every day now for 4 days, with slower patches in between the 10 or so hour long gushes.

in the first 4 months i bled very heavily for a whole 7 days.
