It's fine! I was worried sick when I went for mine. The sedation is great though. I was like, "Oh, nothing's happening, I'll just have a little sleep" and the next thing, the doctor's telling me what happened. (I have a hiatal hernia which is annoying but not the end of the world).

The only odd thing is, I felt like I had a weird dream in the middle of it when I felt something in my throat. Obviously the tube going on. I have a feeling I might have tried to fight the doctors off though! Oops

Seriously though, it's quick and there's really nothing to worry about.

I think I had to wear a gown but there was no nudity going on if I remember rightly. They made me wear woolly socks and a big warm blanket but that may just be an American thing!

You won't be aware of anything though, it'll be fine. And it's nice to have answers about what's going on.

I had one last week, without sedation. It was horrible, but at least it was over quickly, and I could escape as soon as it was over!!! They found a hiatus hernia, think I'd rather it was an ulcer - which could be cured, rather than all the change of lifestyle advice which I've been given. Anyway, the sore throat lasted a couple of days.

candycanesonthexmastree · 09/12/2009 18:31

why didnt anyone tell me it was going to be like that - jeez no need to sugar coat it !!!

I am having one next week and I think I will go for the sedation as I am a wuss. This thread really helped thank you all.

MollieO · 09/12/2009 18:50

I had one when I was pregnant. I was sedated and whatever they give you means you don't actually remember anything about it. Not that unpleasant and over pretty quickly.

candycanesonthexmastree · 09/12/2009 18:52

sorry mollieo dont mean to say your wrong but i had the throat spray and the sedation and i do remember most of it
but having said that we all react differently to things

OP posts:
MollieO · 09/12/2009 19:03

Didn't have a throat spray. I had an injection which I think was some type of valium. I assume there are different levels of sedation depending on what the purpose of the gastroscopy is and how long it will take. I do know others who have had this procedure and their experience was the same as mine.

MollieO · 09/12/2009 19:04

Didn't realise this was not a current thread!

candycanesonthexmastree · 09/12/2009 20:03

I'm sorry it was awful, candycane. Honestly, the sedation knocked me out. I really didn't mean to sugar coat it.

It's GOOD that they didn't find anything though. Hiatal hernias really suck.

candycanesonthexmastree · 10/12/2009 06:32

yeah im glad they didnt find anythong but now im wondering well whats going on then - im not making all this stuff up ???
