Would it be a bad idea to give DD iron supliments?

She is very run down & takes a multivitamin. She has had virus after virus this autumn, with a couple of tummy bugs plus tonsillitis thrown in; She has a reasonable diet but is a bit off her food atm.

She is a bit reluctant to have a blood test (which I would insist on if I was dramatically concerned as it's just a hunch/idea it seems silly to have an argument)

Obviously if it is a bad idea I won't do it - but I know vit C for example is water soluble so any excess is just wee'd away; is iron the same?

I was thinking of something like floradix - as I remember this being natural ish when I wa spg with her

how old is she?
does the multivit have iron in?
it is likely to give her constipation
better to check if she needs it first

Katymac · 22/11/2009 20:53

She is 12
No - it's ACDE
Maybe but Floradix is normally better than most iron - as it's organic (as in made from plants rather than made without chemicals)

Not looking forward to the big argument

Do they sell Floradix in the chemist?
Might be worth asking the pharmacist about giving it to her
iirc little kids can easily OD on iron - no idea about teens though

so overall not much help from me!

That's a good idea EldonAve - I guess I am worried about her being so poorly & grasping at straws

Thanks

The dr looked at her eye lids & said she was fine - there's scientific for you

I would go with Floradix rather than actual iron supplements. Zinc is good for the immune system too. Maybe she needs a bigger boost of Vit C -- you can get up to 500mg in Boots. I'm not suggesting that (though I give it to mine maybe three times a week) but the amount you get in a multi vit or Redoxon can be a bit meh.

The other thing you can do which is supposed to be really good is cooking in cast iron pans, if you've got any.

Thanks for the ideas

I used spatone when pg, you can mix it with juice. It didn't make me constipated (which traditional iron supplements have done in the past).

On a seperate note, my mother was always badgering me about my iron levels when I was your daughter's age (I was veggie). I can remember being given Minadex(?) and hating the taste

Katymac · 23/11/2009 21:10

Oh yes - I used to have that too
