My mother swore by this, make sure you warm the spoon gently then put the oil in it (as opposed to heating the oil !!)

Hmm, I have had MAJOR problems with my ear since I popped some innocent olive oil in it. Semi deafness, ringing. I wasn;t in pain before, it just felt blocked. Now its even worse. (I also have been shoving cotton buds in there like my life depended on it)

My SIL who is a nurse who syringes ears said it can ease wax but can also adhere to the ear drum. I think thats what I've done.

I would skip the oil, take some pain killers and see GP if its still bad.

Ooh sorry did not know that Cybil, ignore my advice OP, (amateur ear doctor emoticon)

CybilLiberty · 21/11/2009 20:11

Oh I'm amateur too. My Sil said to me 'Never put anything smaller than your elbow in your ear'

To which I replied 'yes but I can't get the Wax out with my elbow'

SoupDragon · 21/11/2009 20:13

Made bog all difference to me when I tried it. Painkillers followed by (in my case) 2 lots of antibiotics.

needanamefast · 21/11/2009 20:27

no
olive oil only useful if you have impacted wax - then can be helpful. but impacted wax causes hearing loss, not pain so not good for earache - need to see gp if persists. if really bad and have fever see out of hours doc.

the elbow comment by cybil is spot on

I don't think it's advisable to put ordinary cooking olive oil in your ear - it should be the BP stuff you get from a pharmacy. But probably better to get some Otex.

Disenchanted3 · 21/11/2009 22:13

oops, ah well, made no difference,

You can put ordinary cooking oil in your ear - just use clean stuff, not oil you've got from the deep fat frier!

Olive oil is best for wax softening, but if you have ear pain it's probably best to see someone at a walk in centre, or your GP surgery to see if there's a reason for the pain.
