Anyone who knows a lot about GYNO problems... I really need to talk!

I have been referred to the rapid access gyno clinic (going in just under 2 weeks) because I have heavy (period like) bleeding after sex, random bleeding throughout the month and an enormous amount of discharge. That is all month long and makes sense almost sensationless. I also get terrible period like cramps after sex both in belly and back. Sex can also be painful.

I'm supposed to get a gyno MOT and I am wondering what to expect. I know they will be looking to rule out uterine cancer but what else? For those of you who've had the same symptoms what did it turn out to be?

They might be looking at pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), endometriosis, cervical cancer, or other issues I can't think of at the moment. Not to offend you but they will probably also check for sexually transmitted infections such as chlamydia. Poor you, it sounds horrible. I hope they find an answer for you quickly and that it turns out to be easily sorted.

I'm 30 and have 1 DC. I'm really nervous, it feels terrible to wait another week and a half.

Hi, not exactly the same as you but I had mid cycle bleeding and I was referred to a gynae and I had swabs for infections, repeat cervical smear, internal exam and a look at cervix (for erosion etc) then an internal ultrasound (so vaginal). In the ultrasound they checked for polyps, fibroids, to see what is going on with ovaries and also consider the thickness of your lining etc.

The thickness of the lining of your uterus is quite important when considering uterine cancer - so make a mental note of where you are in your cycle when you have your scan.

That was as far as my investigations got so no more info beyond what they may do beyond that.

For me it was put down to hormonal changes common at my age (37).

thank you it is quite nerve-wracking actually. I just want it over with. Its hard to think of other things at the moment.

I think you should just assume that it is hormonal or something like endo.

It is very unlikely to be anything sinister as you are young and if you are up to date with smears it is 99.9% certainly not cancer.

well i must admit to being at the quick referral system at your hosp, i had to do alot of chasing to get my appointemnt as i was supposed to be allowed to 'choose and book' but in reality had to get pals as nobody answered the appointement line, hopefully for you this is indicative of a professional and organised hosp

I had 6mo continous bleeding, at times heavier than others, i had a u/s which showed a shadow/space which was poss a polyp, i them had an endoscopy which revealed my uterus was full of polyps (benign fleshy growths) that were removed in the same op

Felt much better

In my initial appointement they gave me a smear (had never had one due to age rules) and took a history as gp had already done scan, i also had to have quite a few blood tests, as i was put on operating waiting list i also had swabs for mrsa (nose and cheek i think)

littleducks I'm sorry you had to go through all that to get to be seen! How horrible. I am glad I am getting it done quickly. I've had a lot of health problems for a long time so I'm already practically living at the gp they probably just did it that way to see the back of me!

I think when there are problems they do various checks

  • swabs for infections
  • ultrasound to detect polyps etc. They check ovaries and womb look as it should
  • possibly a hysteroscopy where they put a small camera in and have a look. Biopsy on womb lining
I suppose this will vary depending on what they find out along the way

I'm not medical but was having irregular bleeding and thats what they did with me (I'd had a recent smear test which was clear but they prob would have done that too if not). As for womb cancer its extremely rare pre menopause. The lining of the womb will vary in thickness at different times of your cycle so you might want to find out in advance at what time in your cycle they should scan you (I had to go back twice because of this, which only adds to the stress).
After going through all the above they could find nothing wrong with me so hopefully it will be the same for you

i had very similar problems to you and it turned out to be a massive fibroid ,along with several smaller ones.

the other health problems have been low immune system issues, pneumonia, allergies, asthma and migraine. In other words my body is a train wreck!

ive had near enough the same symptoms as u infact i have been to dr today about it and have been referred for a scan. am really worried and scared. hope everything is ok for u.
