what on earth is this?
have had a pounding headache all day, and now for the last hour am hearing a constant hissing sound (like gas escaping). headache gets worse in bright light, feel nauseous/sick.
sound is there when i cover my ears.

it could be vestibular migraine. see if you can persuade the pharmasist to give you some imigran OTC (they should do but some want to question you at lenght!) and see if this works. otherwise you may need to see an ENT as it could be an ear problem

is the headache one sided? if so then its a migraine, its not unusual to hear noises in your ear with a migraine, however if you get tinnitus(noises) at other times see an ENT specialist

I would be tempted to wash out the ear to check there is nothing in there. Lean head to one side, fill ear with water then tip out.

The headache was "all over", hissing only in right ear. Is still there now, though headache is gone.

The sound is a bit like the one you hear in a seashell (or gas escaping). At first, I actually thought that there was something wrong with one of our radiators, but when I started investigating where the noise was coming from ds1 and ds2 thought I had gone mad, as they could not hear anything(dh could not hear anything either), and I heard the noise all over the house...

When I mentioned it to my mum, she said I have to go to gp ASAP. My dad has meniere's and his started out with much the same symptoms. I'll try and get an appointment.

sounds as if you are getting an ear infection or you have got catarrh in your tubes
