Mumps outbreak in people who had the MMR...

I heard a girl talking on the radio this morning. She had just got over mumps, as had most of the people in her halls of residence at university (think she said she was in Cheltenham).

She had the MMR and the booster, so did most of her peers.

This girl's GP said, "The MMR doesn't work". Is he wrong?

DS is 14mo and hasn't had the MMR. Given that it would seem it's no good, why should he?

Is it just possible that the GP may have said that vaccinations in general aren't 100% guaranteed to prevent you catching the disease?

agree with acnebride... vaccinations will never be 100% effective.

No, very specifically the MMR. She'd been told elsewhere that she should just have another booster (which isn't a booster from what I heard today, but the whole lot again), but her GP told her that the MMR didn't work.

Not saying he was right, just interested - and since an awful lot of people seem to have caught mumps and had the MMR, it would seem the middle initial of the MMR doesn't work, perhaps?

But not 100% effective and a whole university halls of residence catching mumps - really? That's OK?

Well, there you go. Will be interested to see any more info on this.

I certainly thought the recnet student-age mumps epidemic was/is to do with those who didn't have the MMR.

hmmm... strange. personally I would find it hard to believe that he actually said "the mmr doesn't work"... but you never know.
Perhaps the mumps part of the vaccine isn't THAT effective...

My daughter has had the mmr and still caught measles.

They need to introduce a teen booster as they have in the US, and then and adult one, then a midddle aged one, then an elderly one....... OR they could just let everyone catch mumps as young children and stay immune for life, and not risk any nasty fertility side effects you get risk as adults. Radical!

there will always be people who get measles, mumps or rubella despite having the vaccine...

I do agree that a whole hall of them getting it is a bit odd though!

I have had mumps twice! so having it doesn't guarantee you immunity!

Can mumps do nasty things to children if they catch it young?

I know it's dodgy in older boys, especially.

Hunkermunker - If she is at Uni just now then it's unlikely that she actually had the triple vaccine. When I was 10 all the girls at our school got the Rubella jab.... but there was no such thing as the MMR as far as I know. That would've been in 1988.

I also received teh MMR booster at Uni after there was an outbreak of Rubella in the Male students in the halls of residence.

Just done a bit of googling and apparently the MMR vaccine was introduced in 1988.

So they'd have had the booster (which was the whole lot again) and the girl on the phone was very sure she'd had the initial jab too, as had lots of her peers - but she was just a voice on the radio, so i don't know for sure

also... how does she know that all her peers had it?

I guess she asked them! Really scientific study, I know...

lol... maybe she just wanted to be sensational on radio!

I had MMR and I had the lot, Mumps, Measles and German Measles all before I was 4.

I still had dd done though.

HunkerMunker - Yes, but was that not 1988 when they started giving the MMR jab to toddlers? She couldn't have been a toddler in 1988 could she? ANyway... either way even though I had suffered from all 3 diseases I was still told to have the MMR booster at Uni.

I was vaccinated against measles and had everything else - mumps, chicken pox, whooping cough, German measles.

My dd caught mumps at 24 months having had the initial MMR jab at 15m but obviously before the school booster. She then gave it to my dh who is now subfertile......

QF, from what I've just found while googling, the MMR was introduced for babies from 12-15mo in 1988.
