Does the time to get blood results vary depending on the urgency of the condition?

Hi
I saw my Dr this morning as I have some enlarged glands in my groin.
She told me to book a blood test at reception and then a follow up appointment with her when the results come back.
In the past bloods have taken at least 10 days to come back but the receptionist has booked my follow up for a week later (only 5 working days)
Dr said I might need a biopsy and possibly referal to a specialist. She hasn't mentioned anything specific but I think she is testing for a lymphoma (cancer of the glands.)
Am I right in assuming that bloods that are needed more urgently would get results quicker?
Also do Drs still give you a bloods form to hand to reception to book a test? Curious as I didn't get one?

It probably all computerised now mumbo. The results get sent back via computer too. My dd's recent set of completely routine bloods took 3 days.

Hope you're OK but try not to panic,

Thanks for your reply.
That makes sense, if it's done via computer they would certainly be back within the week. A lot better than having to wait around.

Thanks again

You can get results for urgent blood tests the same day if in hospital or the next day through a surgery. So a week's OK.

I would try not to worry too much mumbomama (easier said than done I know). When my DS3 had to have a blood test for the same thing a few years ago(in fact glands up all over body - armpits, groin, neck etc) the Dr told me to come back the week later but the results were actually back the same day. The surgery actually took pity on me and rang me that afternoon as they could see how stressed I was (he was fine by the way). The receptionist told me when I was waiting for my own blood test results a couple of weeks back, that if anything of concern is found they contact the surgery very quickly.

I think it depends what they are testing.

Some tests have to be done within 24hrs of being bled and therefore results are back within 48hrs.

What i am trying to say is that each type of blodd test has it's own turn around time, and not necessarily because of urgency but because of how long the test actually takes to be turned around at the lab

The time for porcessing also depends on the type of tests that are run on samples. I wouldn't make anything too much about the time difference (five days isn't an unrealistic time) and just be reassured that you will get the tests and care necessary to get to the bottom of this. Good luck and try not to stress too much as that will not help.
