Contraception: please talk to me about Implanon (especially if you used to take marvelon)

I have taken Marvelon conraceptive pill for years but since having dd 2 yhears ago have really struggled with it. I have persisted in the hope my hormones would return to "normal" but no such luck.

I get huge hormonal dips during my TOTM including massive headaches, irritability and incredibly painful periods.

the doctor has recommended Implanon as it has lower hormone doses and should stop the "dips" which I currently suffer from.

I am booked to have it fitted tomorrow, and am actually quite scared!

can anyone share stories of how they have done with the implant?

I had implanon for 3 years up until April this year. My periods were initially irregular for a bit (about 4/5 months) which was a real pain but then they stopped altogether which was great. However I do think it eventually affected my libido and after 3 years it'd virtually killed it off altogether!

I've had it removed and am now having dreadful probs with a copper coil....

Everyone responds differently to different forms of contraception. Good luck with whatever you decide to do

I had Implanon removed last October when we decided to try for a baby - currently 38 weeks pg. I'd only had it in for 6 months, during which time I bled every few days. Ended up having to take the pill at the same time to even out the hormone. I too gained a few extra pounds, a few moodswings and lowered libido. Everyone's different though and it may work for you, Beesonmummyshead.

I'll be having the merina iud put in as soon as I can. I'd had it removed after 4 years and then changed to implanon. It was fantastic. No pain, virtually no periods and I actually lost 2 stones within a year after having it fitted. The hormone in it is more localised than the pill or implanon and doesn't seem to have any adverse side-effects. Gp informed me at the time that it's nearly as effective as sterilisation!

Thanks for all your advice, I went to doctors today to get implant fitted, but upon discussion the doc decided it probably wasn't write for me (as i'd bled without stopping on the mini-pill which is similar in hormone content to the implant)

So I am on a lower oestrogen pill in the hope that will sort me out!

I am scared of the mirena coil so will be having that fitted as a last resort (ridiculous, non-sensical scaredyness)

If you do decide to go for the merina, please don't be scared. It was fitted really quickly and easily - far less gruesome than implanon, tbh. Getting it taken out took about 2 seconds, as opposed to the implanon which took the nurse 25 mins and an inch-long incision on my arm because it had become embedded. Good luck with the pill though x

It is not rediculous & non sensical...Mirena coil is evil, imo! Google it thoroughly before going ahead & if you have problems with the PO Pill, avoid it!
