Just after the birth of my DD I was diagnosed with Hypothyroidism and was put on 50mg of thyroxine a day.
Despite being only 45, I was diagnosed with the start of Macular Degeneration (an eye condition whereby you can lose your sight - this normally arises when you are 60+ years old!)
The consultant prescribed I-Caps (a vitamin pill high in Lutein and Zeaxanthin which has proved to be successful in slowing down this condition) but it also contains zinc and beta carotene. After taking them for several weeks they started making me feel v. sick. I did a little bit of research and found that people with hypothyroidsm cannot break down or absorb beta carotene, so I imagined the sicky feeling was from being a little toxic! However, I now need to find an alternative supplement without beta carotene (which seems to be in most vits!)
Also, a friend told me today that she read somwhere that you shouldn't take either zinc or potassium either if you are taking thyroxine. I've tried to google this but can't find anything about it. Does anyone here know if this is true?
Sorry for the V long ramble, but hoping to get at least one reply!
