Bleeding after rectocele and cystocele repair (Vaginal Prolapse)

Good evening,

I am now 1 week post a grade 2 rectocele and small cycstocele repair.

I am obviously sore but I am a little concerned about the fact that I am still bleeding to the level that I am.

I was discharged in a appaling way from St Thomas's and have been given no post op information.

Anybody else had a repair done recently. I am only 33 and only have 1 daughter as have lost 4 pregnancies in the last two years, I would like to know if anyone has had more children after a repair.

Sorry to hear about your treatment via St Thomas's. I have a 10 week old son who was born there and now fear i have vaginal prolapse. I feel like there is something there that shouldn't be and sometimes feel and see a small bulge. It is very upsetting and i just want to feel back to normal again.
Is this what you had? i really don't want surgery, my Dr has suggested the usual exercises and says its due to over stretching and should return to normal; i can't see that happening! but hope she's right.

I have read lots about this now and many women go on to have further babies with a prolapse and no problems so i think you should be fine. there is a good website called well women which might be able to answer your question.

Hi , yes thats is eactley what I had.

I knew that I was bulging into my vagina as I could feel the lump and in order to go to the toilet I need to push the lump back towards my rectum.

U have been told I can still have more children but by C -section.

To be honest I am not sure I will be blessed again and my quality of life was getting to such a point that I needed something done.

You can also be given a muscle strenthening pessery. It is shaped like a donout and helps keep the vagina staright.

I would at the moment make sure you are not gettig constipated by eating a good diet, keep your weight to a healthy level, dont lift anything to heavy and you should be ok. Also your baby is only 10 weeks my daughter is 4 1/2 now so i know mine was not going to spring back into action. PLEASE DO YOUR PELVIC FLOORS-THEY REALLY ARE IMPORTANT

I had to have this done as I really could'nt have a Bowel movement and it was making me ill,

hi Iam waiting for my appointment with consultant.GP said I have rectocele and cycstocele.My main problem is with emptying my bowels.I have 2 small bulges constantly visable and have finished my family(or is that more like they've finished me off!!4big babies,2 difficult deliveries and 2problematic c sections).
Anyway,my question if anyone can help is
Is the surgery worth it?

Well I am now at three weeks post Op, the stiches are still in and the bleeding has stopped although it has been replaced by this annoying leaking. I am still quite numb and have not got the sensation back of wanting to go to the wee yet.

Being able to have a Bowel movement without assistance as helped me know end as I am feeling a lot healthier and am regular twice a day. I have been watching my diet.

I did get an infection and needed antibiotics which has now cleared up, am a little worried about the peranium stitch as it does not seem to want to heal.

The surgery will be worth it for me as I was heading towards a hysterectomy and I have not finished with the idea of another child. It does require complete rest post op which may be hard with 4 kids Laine but not emptying your bowles properly can have long term effects on your health.

I am 3 weeks post-op - rectocele repair and perineum rebuild. It was a bit rough - initial pain and a lot of anxiety about bleeding/discharge, but I am so glad I had it done. I had 5 days in hospital and have been taking it easy since I got home. Started driving again last week. BMs are normal now, which is great, pain lessening each day, no bleeding/discharge any more, just waiting for stitches to dissolve and full healing now.

People's experiences with this surgery seem quite variable though - in terms of recovery, length of hospital stay, general results. There's another thread on here re posterior repairs I recommend you look at

How long does it normally take to have a bowel motion after a rectocele repair and does it hurt?

hi there, i had a hysterectomy and bladder repair in june of this year which i would say i am fully recovered from. This op was done under general anaesthetic and i stayed in hospital for 2 days. However, i am now due to have a rectocele repair and my consultant wants me to have it done under local aneasthetic. I am slightly worried about the implications of this as to be honest i would rather "be out of it" than be awake. Has anyone had this surgery done under local, how long does it take and what is it actually like. Really need my mind put to rest.

I had a posterior repair week ago today. It was performed with a spinal anaesthetic and sedation. The anaesthetist recommended this and I took his advice. There is nothing at all to be worried about and I can tell you I was shaking like a leaf before going into the Theatre. I can still feel the lump though which worries ne a bit. However, dont be scared, honestly, its ok. Hope you read this and it gives some confidence!

I am due to have a rectocele repair in December but I am having this done by local anaesthetic. Is this something I need to worry about as I am already worrying that I will be awake when it is done! Can you put my mind at rest? :)

A message to Georgiegirl2. I am due to have similar operation soon. How did you manage to get 5 days in hospital?? I went in initally for a 'pile' operation but they discovered that I had a prolapse, or rectocele, which explained why I nearly passed out each time they decided to 'band' them (because that is what they try to do with piles, nobody had thought... 'hold on is there something else wrong here' or 'I wonder why my patient is on soooo much pain?' !!) Have to admit that I am very worried. If I could manage a few days in hospital it would be better than rolling around in pain at home.I would love to hear your story.

Just wondering if anyone has tried the Kegel8 device which has a programme for prolapses, worth considering if you want to avoid surgery.

I had a cystocele op 2 weeks ago and I went for the spinal. I would recommend it, I actually did wake up before they finished but this was no problem and you just chat away! Had no real problems after the op - my surgeon said I needed 8 stitches so it was a large prolapse. Am wondering if salt baths could help the internal stitches - does anyone know. Am using fybogel to help as a stool softener as "going" can be painful. Havent been out of the house yet but the snow doesn't help and really want this op to work. I am 62 so older than most of you but am a very active lady. I have two dogs at home now rather than kids but believe me they need a lot of looking after and I am their mum after all!! Ha Can't wait untill I can walk out with them again. Anyone else got dogs?

Hi all, thought I would join with my experiences so far. I had a grade 3 rectocele and grade 2 cystocele repair as well as perineum rebuild 3 weeks ago today. The first two weeks (especially the second) were awful.. at one point my stitches felt so tight I wanted to snip them.

As the swelling went down so did the pressure and around the 2 week point I felt like I turned the corner and was able to manage the pain without the need for any meds.

I am having my period this week and it is extremely heavy and painful, making me feel quite unwell. I wondered if others experienced this with their first period?

I dont seem to have lost any stitches yet.... how long do these take to heal?

I also had a reaction to the anti clotting jabs in hospital that left me with 2 large raised red areas that are still there... did anyone else have this??

Am grateful for this site, as helpful as my partner has tried to be, its not the same as being able to read/ discuss with other women that have been through same thing.

Hi ladies can anyone advice me. I'm 60 years old & 5 days post op from vaginal rectocele repair. I'm naturally really sore BM is terrifying but I'm managing with loads of fruit but I'm still bleeding not massively but definitely enough to need a pad does anyone know how long this should go on for when I left hospital I was told a few days. Hi I am aged 59 and 6 days post op vaginal rectocele and skin tag. In dreadful spasmodic vaginal pain and still bleeding, worse than when in hospital Am a little concerned as it seems to be more painful now than after the op. Just wanted to know also if this is normal also.

Lainy, this is an old thread ( check the dates on previous posts ) so start a new one for current experiences and advice.
Severe pain doesn't sound like what's expected at this stage. Ring the ward or your GP if it's still going on.

Hello...I had my repair of cystocele and rectocele- done 5 days ago!! Being a retired nurse I am appalled at the lack of discharge instructions that were given from my facility...I LITERALLY was rushed out of there without the presence of my husband to hear the discharge instructions with me...I was so high on meds i was given..I doubt I remember anything!! I improving slowly and still have tremendous rectal and back pain and tho bleeding has been minimal..I am starting to have some clotting!! I wish I had been told what to expect other than just" call if you have any problems!!!" I am so upset at the lack of professionalism...I did not even see-Who I abso;utely love- after as she had an emergency..nor have I recieved any post-op calls on how I am feeling from a nurse...I will be letting them know this and how I was rushed out out of there! THIS SHOuLD NEVER HAPPEN! God speed and the best for a swift recovery!
