Urgent advice re: dropped baby!

DS (10 mths) just fell off the bed and fell onto his front. Cried but seems consolable. My frst insticnt was too feed hiom but when he started closing his eyes I stopped that one. It's unusual for him to want to sleep like that these days. His face has gone a bit colourless esp his lips.
ANy thoughts? We're in the middle of nowhere in Spain which is why I am asking you all!

I know this sort of thing happens quite a lot.

Did he throw up? Is there any chance he was unconscious, for even a moment?

If no, he's probably ok. I'm sure others will be along with firmer opinions ...

No NHS direct here. No vomit. He is now playing quite well, a little bit quieter than usual perhaps. He'll be due his nap in a couple of hours. Not sure about that.

My baby fell off the bed at 4 months, and when I called the doctor he said not to worry unless she got lethargic or was sick. ( and yes it does happen alot)

You say your ds is getting a bit dozy, so I would monitor this over next 10 mins or so, it could be that the shock has made him drowzy, if he needs a sleep put him somewhere you can see him at all times, and if he vomits do get him to the nearest hospital straight away.

My dd was absolutely fine.

I would try and keep him awake for a while if you can - how soon after the fall did he start seeming sleepy?
If he doesn't seem quite right I would take him to the hospital.

Think general rules are if he doesn't vomit and has stopped crying he will be fine. When he has his nap check you can wake him though.

chicca, how is he now ?
my ds now 7 was always falling at this age, If he wasnt knocked out, hasnt been sick and his pupils are equal size and reacting to light, I'm sure he'll be ok, children often go pale after a fall. Give him lots of reassurance, but if you're still worried do call for medical help.

If he's playing ok then he's hopefully fine. It's still a while till his nap so I'm sure if anything was amiss you'd know by then - I'm sure it'll be fine to put him down by then. Just probably not in the next 15 mins or so.

He was immediately sleepy. We're going to hospital to double check. He probably want to fall asleep in the car though.
He's eating ok at the moment.

Self-care advice (by NHS direct):

-Place a covered cold compress over the bruised area immediately-do not apply ice directly to the skin.
-Give your child paediatric paracetemol oral suspension (available from pharmacists) if you think they are in pain -read the instructions for the correct dose.
-Encourage your child to rest quietly for the next 48 hours. Watch for signs of getting worse this can include any signs of vomiting, confusion, sleepiness, trouble moving limbs, memory or speech problems or increasing pain.

But if he is already playing I think he is OK (DS fell down the stairs and couldn't move his legs, by the time the ambulance arrive a few minutes later he was able to stand by himself, he started playing while waiting half an hour in hospital and we were sent home with in the hour with a very distressed toddler crying because he wanted to go back in ambulance ).

Back from local cottage hospital (yes, they still have them here!). He seems alert and is happy playing. The advice was that we shouldn't let him have his nap but that he can sleep this afternoon but not for longer than an hour and to check him overnight every hour. He's got some lovely marks on his face now.

The weird thing is that he suddenly has a big rash around his waist where his nappy sits - he's never had this before.

DH (who was in charge at the time) is beside himself though......

Ahh, poor dh - this does happen a lot. Ds3 fell off the bed a few months ago - he was about 5 months, and it was a high bed too. He fell onto his front and I felt sick for the rest of the day - like such a bad mummy. Sounds like your ds is fine and it's a lesson learned for dh. Tell him we've all done it!

Hi Chicca, poor you and ds! They're tougher than you think though, babies, I'm glad the hospital says he's ok. We've all done it, ds fell off the bed when he was about 5 months because I fell asleep, he's 7 now. And dp dropped dd by picking her up unstrapped in in her car seat when she was about 2 months. She's 1.5 now. Let us know how he is tomorrow, but I bet he's fine.

glad to hear he seems to be fine - you certainly managed to get to a hospital and back quicker than I would here (I'd probably still be waiting to be seen)

Indeed - that is one of the benefits of living here.

One more thing - we were told not to give him any food -just milk. I'm not sure about this - does anyone know why that would be?

I believe that's to avoid him to choke with case that he fell inconcious and vomit whatever is in his stomach. My sister had an accident which left her dizzy for several hours and I remember that she was not allowed to eat anything for the day and just water few hours after the accident.

hello hope your ds is ok now, if its any consolation my ds was dropped off bed by dh who had fallen asleep with him on his chest my ds was only 1 week old but he is fine now 7 he has had many falls im sure he will be fine and no food will be incase he is sick but if he seems ok I would give him something light good luck mcmum xx

Good to hear he is feeling better and palying.

Advice here now, according to DD's nursery cards, is that they no longer stop the child from sleeping, unless they are obviously lethargic/drowzy from the fall. If it is normal nap time they are still allowed to sleep, but are checked more frequently than normal.

He's feeling so much better that he woke up at 5am and I can't get him back to sleep. Aaargh! He normally sleeps until at least 8.

Could there be a connection, I wonder?
