I know I have done this to death but...... I got the coil fitted in Feb after 18 months of random bleeding/spotting (I have PCOS). I got the coil fitted beleiving it would stop my periods and I would return to some sort of normal. Anyway I am still having random bleeding/spotting almost daily and it is driving me nuts. I miss 'going for an early night' and I need to know if and when this will stop. Does anyone know of anything else that can be done. PLEASE ADVISE????

This was me not long ago. I would keep going with it. I had mine fitted in January and had spotting, breakthrough bleeding and continued heavy bleeding. Last month much lighter and this month even lighter and lasted only 3 days.

This from someone who bled massively for 9/10 days at a time, and had periods every 13-14 days.

bambi06 · 07/06/2009 14:18

I bled constantly `heavy] for 46 days before it started to calm down but then very irratic but now.nearly a year later i have virtually no periods but can still be very irregular..but now have no sex drive at all and have spots[acne ]which is spreading all over since having the damn thing put in.. and sometimes painful sex even..not happy with it!!and thinking of having it removed

So a mixed bag of replies then. Thanks all.

I'm with the positives, I can't remember having periods at all since I had mine fitted, although I was B/F at the time. I've just had my second one fitted because my first had been in 4.5 years, can't actually think of any side effects to it. I've put on about half a stone and tend to hold weight on my tummy now, but could be a sign of being nearly 5 years older. The only thing has started causing me a little concern in the last few months, is that I seem to have grown a moustache which kind of caught me unawares, but again I don't know if I can put that down to the coil or age. I did however forget to mention it to the GP when I had my coil changed. Maybe next time I go I'll bring it up.

The doctor did say when she was fitting mine that she finds patients either love it or hate it.

bargainhuntingbetty · 07/06/2009 17:59

At the moment I am hating mine. Fingers crossed I will love it soon as it is my last hope. They wont even entertain a hystorectomy till im at least 35. m

Pain during sex can be very indicative of endometriosis. I would seek a referral to a gynae as a matter of course if you have not already done so.

PCOS does not necessarily cause random bleeding. If you have not already seen a gynae to date (and the FPC are not the people to see if there are gynae issues as they are generalists) I would ask your GP to refer you to such a person.

You should be checked to see if fibroids are present; these can cause heavy bleeding. Spotting between periods as well should be checked out medically to establish the cause.

Don't think the Mirena will help somehow as its hormonal (and can further much up your disruptive hormones because of PCOS). They should be looking to find the cause/s (realise you have PCOS but that does not normally cause such bleeding to arise) of the bleeding and heaviness. They haven't been able to control the symptoms to date let alone find the cause!. I would be very angry.

You will need to be persistant in order to get answers. I'd start asking the GP for a referral and do not take no for an answer.

I;m having really bad mood swings and have put weight on with mine (in since nov) I am considering having it removed as I'm essentially getting bad bad PMT every 10 days or so. I do get a very light bloody mucus (bit like a show) along with the PMT/backache/cramps. I had very light periods for a few months then this. My dr says it all settles around 6 months in, and dr is a lady! hth

Anyone else with the extreme intolerance of other humans since having mirena? Should I start a new thread?

honie · 07/06/2009 21:04

Sorry, just to add I had mine fitted to ease endometriosis and am caught between a rock and a hard place as to which way to go, next treatment step is induced menopause {sad} for a year?!?

Sorry for semi hijack OP

doesnt sound too positive about the coil realy does it..

Ninkynork · 07/06/2009 22:31

bargainhunting please do not even consider having an operation to remove your womb until you have been checked out for a blood-clotting disorder such as Von Willebrands Disease. It affects 1% of the population and too often goes undiagnosed by unsympathetic doctors. Mine was, for 30 years, and only because my DD has a severe form of it.

The mirena was supposed to be the answer to my prayers but made my bleeding much worse. I am happily on the mini-pill and having no problems for the first time in my life.

HTH, sorry, it's a bit of a bugbear of mine that so little is known about it.

Ninkynork · 07/06/2009 22:38

*only diagnosed because of DD.

bargainhuntingbetty · 08/06/2009 10:48

Wowo thanks guys.

Attila: I have been to see 2 gyneas and they couldnt shed any light on the bleeding. It has been gooing on for 2 years now and I am very angry and pissed off about it. I have also had internal scans which only showed'enlarged folicles' whatever that means.

Honie: Sorry you are having such a bad time. Hope you get answers and proper help soon. [hug].

Ninky: I will look into this condition although if I cut myself etc I havent noticed any prolonged bleeding etc but I will certainly look into it. Thanks for the advice.
