So very sorry, a bit gross. I have a lump in my gum which has yellow gunk coming out of it. I did go and see the dentist last week but any suggestions what I can do now?

it was x-rayed and there's no abcess there. It was swollen when I went on Friday, now there's yellow gunk coming out of it. The dentist isn't open tomorrow so do you think I need antibiotics? Call the emergency dentist? Out of hours GP? Leave it and let the gunk come out?

Thanks.

Try NHS direct? Are you in pain?

snigger · 24/05/2009 21:16

Brush, brush, and brush again.

It'll hurt like feck, but it'll do you good - keep brushing and gargling, and as soon as humanly possible see a dentist.

(IMO )

Sounds like an abcess. You need to go back to dentist.

FluffyBunnyGoneBad · 24/05/2009 21:18

It doesn't hurt. It' not hot, a little red and swollen though. It's up in the gum so brushing won't do anything.

He said an abcess would go blue and to go back if it did. It's just a dark pink lump with yellow runny stuff coming out of it. It's not alot and not yellow all the time. No fever etc.

Mmmm... weird. I had an abscess and it DID hurt quite a bit.

Is it an ulcer? Can you go to a chemist tomorrow? They might recommend something?

preggersplayspop · 24/05/2009 21:21

I had the same sort of thing and it was an abcess, I left it too long (I'm talking weeks, not a few days though so don't let me stress you out) and ended up losing a tooth . Don't be afraid to go and see the dentist again!!

holdingittogether · 24/05/2009 21:21

you need to allow the gunk out. If pressure builds up you will be in pain. Agree to brush the gum with a clean toothbrush to encourage it to drain and then gargle with salt water to keep it clean. When I first left school I worked in a dental surgery and loved watching the dentist lance swellings with a scalpel, lots of puss would normally spurt out!

FluffyBunnyGoneBad · 24/05/2009 21:24

Nice job holdingit , I'll do that.
The practice isn't open until Tuesday. It's not an ulcer, it's a lump. He did x-ray it when I went on Friday and there was no sign of any infection on the film. I keep proding it to get the gunk out. Is this the right thing to do?

Yellow gunk sounds like pus TBH...

Dh having terrible tooth grief at the mo, the dental surgeon said to rinse with strong salt water solution every few hours, so it's obviously the done thing! So second holdingit's suggestion!

FluffyBunnyGoneBad · 24/05/2009 21:42

Thankyou BigBellas. I'll do that and give them a call on Tuesday morning.

Keep it draining and clean until you can see dentist.

Gum boil?

FluffyBunnyGoneBad · 26/05/2009 11:19

Nope, not a gumboil. It's in my jaw above a tooth. I'm off to the dentist. Damn! He said last week that he'd probably have to pull my one remaining milk tooth out and pull the adult tooth down. It's gona cost me!

It was an abcess. he gave me some antibiotics that 'probably won't work' I've got to go back if they don't and he'll send me to an orthodontist. He said it's about 4K to have a brace and I don't need a full one so god knows how much it's going to cost. I hope the antibiotics work. I don't have 4k
