Periods, holidays and 11 y.o dd

DD2 is going away with school and is worried she will have her period whilst on holiday with school and wont be able to go swimming - which she loves. Just wondered if others have had this problem - I know there are tampons, do we go that way or is there something one can get from the Dr to delay it....she seems so young for both options to be honest but then I feel sorry for her having to miss out. Can anyone advise please

Not sure whether you mean she has already started and worried about having another period when away, or whether she's worried about starting on school trip.

My DD1 had first period while away abroad on school trip. She phoned me to ask about swimming. of course I panicked, imagining hugely heavy period and hotel sheets etc, but in fact t'was so light that she went swimming with no problems.

again- has she started- if so, are they regular, and has she tried tampons so far?

I woudn't suggest she tries tampons for the 1st time abroad- she might manage but my DD was roughly 16 before she was happy with them.

I think it's best to be open about these things but also to play them down- myDD wanted drugs from the dr to delay a period when she was around 15, and going on a school trip, and I said no- no swimming was involved on the school trip. I know that might seem hard, but periods are a fact of life and I don't beleive in taking drugs every time they are not convenient!

She may well find that lots of others aren't swimming for the same reason.

she has only just started and is really heavy.....and she absolutely adores swimming - they are staying in a hotel with a pool.....dont know what to do for the best.....

If she is tall she may have no problem with tampons -- my dd1 was 13 when she started and used tampons pretty much from her second period.

I do not have older DC's but I used tampons from my second period no problem. I would suggest that I think anyway. Do the drugs always definitely work?

duffy fwiw I used tampons from second day of my first period, down to the fact that I was a keen club swimmer and decided that I wasn't going to run my life around it - start as you mean to go on!
