Has anyone else had a sore tongue as part of illness?

I hope this is not a bizarre post and if I was reading it I might think it is a tad funny. But my tongue is so sore!

I have several raised spots on my tongue in the middle and at the sides on the front of my tongue. They hurt when I eat food/talk etc.

I saw the GP yesterday who said that they are not ulcers but possibly the result of a virus. DC have had a cold and the like and DD complained of a sore area on her tongue a week or so back.

I have been rinsing my mouth with diluted tea tree (what a relief!) and rinstead pastilles have helped a bit.

Anyone else out there experienced the same? any advice?

yes- they can be part of a virus andbeing run down- I think I read somewhere that we have tonsil-like structures along the side of the tongue, so they get sore with a virus.

Yes! I had this over New Year (spoilt my night out as we went out for a curry which had been booked and paid for weeks in advance, I couldn't eat the bloody thing as I was in agony). Also had a really sore throat.

I found swilling children's Nurofen medicine around my mouth before swallowing it helped. Took a couple of weeks to go.

Interesting, howto - that's where my tongue was sore. I had to keep my mouth slightly open and lift my tongue up a bit as it was so painful if my teeth touched the sides of my tongue. Attractive!

I have been using warm salty water or tea tree diluted in water which helps for a bit but then it is sore again.

Pharmacist recommended Vitamin B complex. I was hoping it would be gone in a few days, so look forward to a few more days of this!!!! It is so disappointing as I love my food but even turned down a chocolate brownie this afternoon as it hurt so much...

Maybe the up side is that I will lose some weight!

I had this a while back and it seemed to be related to a virus - I had a very sore tongue that actually became swollen, as well as a sore throat, headache and general fatigue. It didn't last long but I felt really ropy for a few days and eating was uncomfortable.

yes, we had this a couple of months ago both my wife, daughter and son got it. My son seems to get repeats every 3 or so weeks which is typical of a virus but not very nice for him.... any other thoughts would be most welcome

My four year old son has a sore tongue and hasn't eaten properly for a few days. he is drinking water, and if he is really hungry he will eat something like yakult or fruit bun, but nothing else. He is also off milk and any fruit are too painful. Any advice would be useful.

My grandson (3) had this last week but we thought hed cut his mouth on a toy until we all got it! The edges of the tongue looks almost frilly like its been cut with pinking shears! Anyway Ive almost lost all sense of taste & its really sore....A weird one. Im going to try vitamins & honeys a good anti viral/bacterial & coats the tongue/mouth for a while, tastes good too so I wont be losing any weight.;0( but if its still the same in 2 days im off to the GP. If its a virus, then I suspect it will be quite wide-spread. Is anyone out there got any answers to this one/ cheers! (well maybe not quite cheers as booze really smarts)!

if you are stressed...you subconsciously rub your tongue back and forth and you will know as you will have the indentations of your teeth in the tip and sides of your tongue. You do this in your sleep too and it makes the sides of the tongue really sore.
