If you drink alcohol, do you have any rules for yourself re. how much/how often etc?

So, do you stick to a certain number of units per week. Or glasses? Or days when you do drink and days when you don't?

Am looking for inspiration!

Tia for all and any replies

I don't Monday to Thursday. Fri, Sat and Sun = share a bottle of wine at least. May also be trips to pub as well, or beer whilst dinner cooking. Nights out = rules change to whatever I fancy

hf128219 · 11/05/2009 20:10

I don't drink Mon-Thurs either.

BigusBumus · 11/05/2009 20:11

I am a bit of a drinker. My "problem" is frequncy rather than amount. I drink a couple of glasses of white wine every evening. Don't get drunk, just like to have my glasses every day.

Kids go to bed, i come downstairs, think "Ahhhh at last i can relax" and start to pour.

Was never like this when i worked full time! Just as a SAHM!

littleboyblue · 11/05/2009 20:11

Not really. I have a drink if I feel like one, but if dc's are in the house, I don't really like to have more than 2 as it leaves me a bit light headed. But as the baby gets older and wakes less through the night, that might change.

MissisBoot · 11/05/2009 20:12

I only drink when dh is here in the evening (which is probably 3 nights a week) unless I have had a particularly stressful day. And on a friday and saturday night.

I'll normally only have one glass with dinner.

TrillianAstra · 11/05/2009 20:13

No rules here. If I were trying to lose weight I would impose rules on alcohol because I think too many of my calories come in liquid form.

FigmentOfYourImagination · 11/05/2009 20:16

Very, very rarely drink Mon-Thurs but if I do then no more than 1 galss and after 7pm.

Weekends -
Friday, no earlier than 7pm.
Saturday/Sunday, no earlier than 3pm

Sorry that makes me sound like I drink constantly from 3pm Sat/Sun until I go to bed. I don't. I just don't like to have my first before 3pm. I couldn't drink solidly from 3pm onwards anyway, I'd be asleep by 7.15

hf128219 · 11/05/2009 20:19

It's an easy habit to get into - crack open a bottle every night of the week for dinner with dh/dp. IT just keeps its simple not to!

When I leave home at 05.30 to get to work I am very grateful

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 11/05/2009 20:20

I used to drink too much (and given the opportunity could still do). I have cut down alot; I don't have rules as such but I do try to avoid it in the week unless it's a very special occasion and if I have drunk in the week I wouldn't at weekends. I don't have more than a bottle of wine a week. If a feel the need to have a glass in my hand I often have cranberry juice in a large wine glass.

EvenBetaDad · 11/05/2009 20:30

Quite strict rules (and they are rules) as me and DW work at home and it is just far far too easy for us to crack open a bottle of wine and end up drinking the lot.

We never drink in the evening, only drink 3 days per week at lunch time and only about 8 - 10 properly measured glasses of wine in total over the week.

We drink a little bit more wine on holiday and Xmas. Never drink beer, cider or spirits.

We stay well below the 16 or 21 units per week recommend by Govt throughout the year.

nikki1978 · 18/05/2009 14:36

I basically only drink socially and I probably go out twice a month and then I have about 6 vodka and cokes each time. I think it helps that I don't drink wine as that is the sort of drink that you tend to have with a meal. I only really drink water the rest of the time and can't imagine drinking alcohol every night (even just one glass), I would feel really unhealthy if I did.

Tortington · 18/05/2009 14:38

i only drink socially - this is always at a weekend.

i cant drink during the week - i phsically can't cope with work, kids and a handover

becuase i literally want to curl up and die.

so i leave it all until a weekend if i am going to.

the reason i dont have a couple of glasses of wine with a meal of an evening is...i don't enjoy it. simple.

EvenBetaDad · 18/05/2009 14:40

Broke my own rule today but had nothng to drink yesterday - so making up for it.

Lulumama · 18/05/2009 14:41

I drink a small glass of wine or a beer most evenings. never more than one if DH is working late. At weekends or parties, the most i will drink is 3 alcoholic drinks. and i drink water/coke in between and eat soemthing before we go out

i never drink to the point of drunkeness, as i hate the hangover the next day and don;'t like feeling giddy and out of control.

PuppyMonkey · 18/05/2009 14:42

If it's a work night - that's three days a week for me - then definitely no alcohol at all cos I have to get up so early. Plus I worry about being over the limit driving the next day.

Any of the other four nights are fair game though. But if I have to get up with dd the next am, I will only have one glass or something.

VinegarTits · 18/05/2009 14:44

I try to stick to drinking alcohol on fri and sat, but if i have had a particularly stressful day i will sometimes pick up a bottle of wine on my way home from work and have a glass or 2 once ds is in bed

ProfYaffle · 18/05/2009 14:44

Generally dh and I share a bottle of wine 2 or 3 times per week. On the rare occasions I/we go out in the evenings I consider 3 pints a reasonable amount.

ProfYaffle · 18/05/2009 14:44

Pints of cider I mean, not pints of wine!

WinkyWinkola · 18/05/2009 14:46

Only ever drink with meals after 7pm. Before pg, would have up to 3 glasses of wine.

ThePellyandMe · 18/05/2009 14:47

I don't drink Tues-Thurs nights. I average 2 small glasses the other nights.

I'd like to drink less and will probably try giving up Friday nights aswell.

My FIL comes round for a meal every Monday and the only thing that keeps me going is the prospect of a glass of wine when the ds' are in bed. Otherwise I wouldn't drink on a Monday.

noddyholder · 18/05/2009 16:04

Only drink at parties or wine with meals.Never drink really without eating maybe the odd one but not keen on pubs in that way.Would prob say i drink about 3 glasses a week although lots of weeks none and sometimes about 5!
