I have had a bad cough for a few weeks (had flu and sinus infection). I was coughing earlier and felt something pop and tear. Now it hurts to move, cough, talk too loudly. My right hand side waist is painful to touch.

Is this just a torn muscle? It hurts like hell.

I have heard of people cracking a rib from coughing. Are you sure it's flu? This can happen with whooping cough/pertussis.

Update. My sister came round earlier to help put the dc's to bed as I was literally crying with pain and she reckons its pleurisy. She had it a few years ago after and chest infection and has done some nursing so she has a bit of a medical background.

If I move or breathe deeply it still hurts, coughing is unbearable. Sis said she thought she had broken a rib when pleurisy first flared up and had the pain in the same place as me. So I am under strict instructions to get to the gp first thing tomorrow.

Ouch ouch ouch.... And more ouch.

Been there done that and it hurts like hell. I've torn muscles and cracked ribs from coughing. The doctors have said that it is good I am not skinny as I would have done serious damage to my lungs. So being fat has its bonuses.
I get it from asthma and pneumonia.
If it's pleurisy then percussion treatment it is for you. I used to go to bed with hot water bottles on my chest.
Have a hot bath, take some nurofen and go to bed (always worked for me) and hope you feel better soon.

I had pleurisy years ago, before I had children fortunately. It is absolute agony you poor thing. Definitely go to your GP tomorrow, I left it for a few days and ended up hospitalised.

I would have thought that pleurisy is generally a bit higher up than the waist though, I had a line of pain at about bra strap level on one side. Hopefully your GP will be able to diagnose and give you lots of lovely pain-killers.

Another update. Saw the gp today and it is a torn muscle. Been given anti-inflammatories, stronger anti-biotics to clear sinus infection and all the gunk and have to take codeine based painkillers.

My lovely lovely family are helping all day, from the dc's breakfast to bedtime as I can't move or lift them. [Rattles off to bed full of pills].

I hope you feel much better soon. Torn muscles take a while to heal though I think so be gentle with yourself.
