menopause...what is best to take?

my DM is really suffering going through the menopause...mainly hot sweats, feeling lethargic, aching joints. she hasnt had a period since april 04, she has been the gp this morn about it, and he has basically fobbed her off about hrt, what is the best thing to take to combat the symptoms? she is really down about it all

HRT will combat the symptoms but she may have to then go through it all again when she stops plus there's the breast cancer risk (though that's more from long term use).
Red clover & black cohosh are both herbal remedies that can be tried and a diet high in "natural" oestrogen foods such as soy and various pulses. Her GP really ought to be able give her a balanced opinion, is there a female GP at the practice or one with an interest in the menopause?

You can also ask to be referred to the HRT specialist at your nearest hospital. Check out on the website and see who it is and then go and ask him for a letter of referral.Good luck

my oldest sister is menopausal and has found adding more soya to her diet made a big difference. There are also herbs you can take - like black cohosh.
