Yes. I had a small discharge for a couple of weeks after the coil and some discomfort, like bad period pain. Worth a fortnight's inconvenience for no periods now!

I got 'settling in pains' i.e. cramps on and off for 3 months. After that it was fine though.

I also got a discharge which was from an infection in my cervix from where it tore when the coil was put in (I was screaming in agony, I think it went a bit tits-up) - but this was all before childbirth - you could probably get a phone box up there now and I wouldn't flinch.

(Worth keeping an eye out for potential infections just in case.)

meferenic acid or something, its analgesic especially for period pain, was great. they did tell me to take ibuprofen when if i run out and need more

ill let you know when it stops. remember, no tampons for 6 wks and go to the 6 wk check up. make sure any discharge isnt mingin smelling - a sign of infection but im sure itll be fine. remember, they did fiddle with your cervix when doing it so maybe thats how you get the showlike thing?

god im sounding all nursey now

hope it works out ok for you!

i think its just because you can pull out the coil (with the threads) whilst taking out the tampon, while it gets established in your womb, or something. maybe also to do with infection?

anyway, i was told no tampons until 6 wk checkup

i still have that showlike discharge thingy, do you?

och its nothing more than a nuisance.

do you still have a bit of pain? if ive been moving around more than usual (bathing dd's, running for bus etc) i feel a slight nip. im worried that its moved or something (this just started this afternoon)

it goes away after just a couple of nips. hopefully its nothing, this contraceptive is my last resort!

might make 6 wk checkup sooner than 6 wks

im glad your period has stopped

Just to add to this - I had the mirena coil 3.5 years ago. I previously had heavy long periods, period pain, PMT etc. It took a while to get used to the idea of 'something inside me' but after a few months the periods started to get less and less and within a year I was down to wearing a panty liner for one day a month (!!!!) which was absolutely brilliant!

I would recommend to all and plan to def. have one put in after this baby (though I think it lowered my sex drive a bit :-( ) because going back to normal periods just for 2 months was enough to convince me that the Mirena is sooo worth it for me.

BTW Morning paper, my dr said she only ever put in one coil for someone pre-childbirth & she has never done it since..she mentioned 'brute force' and another dr friend of mine just said 'brutal'... Its so much easier after having a baby...if you are worried about having it taken out (I was) please don't - it was over in a milisec and was honestly (hand on heart) no worse than yanking a tampon out. (hope not TMI)

I had mt mirena fitted last July . My last bleed (light or heavy) was december. I still get cramps though when I am due on. I also found that myperiod pains were alot worse for the first few months whilst everything settled, was told that that can last up to 8-9months. I am enjooying not having periods but is hard not to panic to begin with. Sorry if this is tmi but i do get my husband to check the wire every week to make sure it is still in place.

nailpolish · 10/05/2005 15:08

becky, did you have a coil with hormones (mirena!) i have a copper coil cos i am convinced the hormones totally deplete my sex drive, the pill did anyway, plus im at risk of dvt's so i want to avoid hormones. anyway, was just wondering if you did, thanks

mosschops, ive still got that showlike stuff, more heavy now, with clots.

HOPE YOU DONT MIND ME ASKING! how about you? do you think this is normal?

Hi,

I came across this thread when I was searching the tinternet for info about having the mirena taken out and I thought my experiences with it may help some people out here. Im 22 now, and have had the coil in for nearly 5 years. I've never had a child and having it put in was reasonably straight forward, although I have to admit, it hurt alot! Just like the worst period cramp youve ever had, which is due to the anaesthetic put in you making your muscles in your uterus cramp up. But I was able to drive home and although I was sick a few times and spent the rest of the day in bed, by 7.30pm I was out having dinner with my boyfriend. All my periods completely stopped, which was excellent as Id suffered with heavy ones from v.young. And it has been completely worry free ever since. The only problem i had was that my strings were too long at first and I used to get a slight catching sort of feeling but I had them cut shorter and all was fine. It has been the best form of contraception Ive tried (ive used the pill and the injection before) and I dont want it to end! Right, story over. Hope everyone has as worry free a time as me.
