so..... do you have any idea roughly what the liklihood of abnormal cells is for someone age 27 who had clear smear 3 years agoand been married to same person for 8 years?if i had this hpv would it have given me an abnormal reult 3 years ago? are there such figures available online? i also thought id read that 9 out of 10 smears come back normal,is that true? many thanks for any help you can offer...x

Hello notso
That is a very tricky set of questions! Hopefully the following info will help but I can't give you a specific idea of what your own risk is, I'm afraid.

The stats for the screened population were (in 2007-2008)*:
3% inadequate
The rest:
93.4% negative/normal
3.4% borderline changes
2.0% mild dyskaryosis
0.6% moderate dysk
0.6% severe dysk
0.1% possible invasive carcinoma or glandular neoplasia

Also some results (such as borderline changes) can be caused by things like hormonal changes, Candida, the presence of an IUCD so aren't necessarily due to HPV.

So I can't really tell you what your individual risk is, you can see that the vast majority of results are ok. Your GP would be able to discuss with you what your relative risk is, if that would help settle your mind.
