Question for those of you who had/have thyroid lumps/cancer

I posted a thread a while ago about my dad who is awaiting a scan for a lump on his thyroid, his scan is soon, but this morning my mum told me that he has now found an enlarged lymph node in the back of his neck, it wasnt there when the doctor very recently checked, now i have gone into worry overload, surely the neck gland means its bad news doesnt it? or have any of you had swollen lymph nodes with thyroid problems?
Any response greatly received.

hi there, I have had years of thyroid problems and finally had radioactive iodine to zap it a few years back. If your dad has a lump he probably had Thyroiditis, which is an inflamation of the thyroid so it would be swollen. I always had swollen lymph glands when my thryoid was playing up. Please don't worry, this all sounds normal. Some of my swollen lymph glands never went down. Good luck and please don't worry. Thyroid cancer is very, very rare. Keep us posted.

I know nothing about thyroids but for cancer cancer backup is a good site.

moocowme · 25/04/2009 21:50

it does sound like thyroid cancer but if detected and removed early you have a very good chance of living for a long time afterewrds.

I had a multi-nodular tumour on my thyroid, it was benign but was growing quite fast so I had it removed.

How does he know it is an enlarged lymph node? Has a doctor told him that or has been googling? He could be worrying unnecessarily. The lump on my thyroid looked like I'd swallowed a golf ball, but was benign.

good luck.

my mother had cancerous growth on lymph node on her neck removed - the operation was qutie delicate and left her with a large scar (now healed over) . she also had radiotherapy which was successful in treating the cancer - was given the all clear last year after two years. as moocowme says even if worst happens, prognosis need not be the worst.

hello again, I posted you last time but under a diff name. Now, 1)remember what I said - thyroid cancer is one of the best ones to have if you have to have it (IYSWIM). 2) If the Drs were that worried I would have thought he would have been scanned by now. 3)if it was something dodgy surely common sense says the glands next to his thyroid would have come up first? 4)if its the small pea size glandy thing at the back of the neck - mine is always up and down for months at a time and I dont even have a thyroid anymore . The gland could be completely coincidental. Honest.
How much longer have you all got to wait until the scan?

PortAndLemon · 26/04/2009 08:40

There are four types of thyroid cancer, two "nice" and two "nasty". As fizzy says, the more common "nice" kinds are the ones to go for if you have to have cancer at all.

My brother had one of the "nice" ones (the second-best one to have) ten years ago -- the scar has faded now so that you can barely see it, and everything is fine so long as he keeps taking his thyroxine,

loopylou6 · 26/04/2009 10:12

Hi again, the gland is on the other side of his neck to his thyroid lump and its at the back of his neck, i spoke to him about it last night (which is very difficult as he hates talking about it) and he says its only slightly swollen, so maybe hopefully it is coincidental.
his scan is around the 5th of may, he also has an appointment around the same time for a growth on his eyelid that the doctor finds suspicious hes finding it all really hard as hes normally so healthy, hes nearly 60 but looks about 40 doesnt smoke, has an excellent diet etc
