Breast cyst drained, has turned to mastitis/ abscess - anyone else had this?

I am very prone to cysts in my breasts and I had a cyst drained at the hopspital about 4 weeks ago. After that I had a mammogram and on the side of the cyst it was agony.

Now I have a huge lump has come up and it's bright red, it feels like it is going to explode. I went to the doc yesterday and she says it might be mastitis and has put me on antibiotics. But today I feel worse than ever, sick and feverish. Am I being too impatient or should I phone back today?

Has anyone else had this? Most of the info I have read assumes you are breastfeeding.

sorry, no experience but it sounds like you need to see the Doc again.

Have you taken paracretamol / ibuprofen ?

Hope some one more helpful comes along soon.

musicposy, I would phone doctor back today just to be safe. I know how you feel, and it's just miserable.

I had this about 2 1/2 weeks after I stopped feeding DS, one minute there was a lump, next a sore red patch, next I had a roaring temperature and was throwing up everywhere (hope you're not having breakfast). I got antibiotics from doctor which cleared the infection that had got into my blood, but not the mastitis at the root of it. I ended up in hospital 3 days later on intravenous antibiotics, even prepped for surgery at one point. They couldn't just drain it cos the stuff was too thick, but luckily the stronger antibiotics cleared it before they cut me open. And the whole thing just completely wiped me out, ended up being off work sick for 2 months afterwards, though maybe I just hadn't enough reserves to cope 4 months after DS was born. (The nurse at the time very kindly told me that if it happens once it'll happen again, so now I'm super paranoid and DD is getting to decide for herself when to stop BF, and it'd better be slowly )

Maybe the stuff you've got from doc just hasn't kicked in yet, but could be you need something stronger - I really would get in touch with them and check. After all, you're potentially saving them and you a stay in hospital.

Good luck with it, hope you get it sorted and are feeling better soon.
