Should I bother the doctor?

I went to see the GP a couple of weeks ago as my hand was sore. About 6 weeks earlier a very heavy bottle fell out of the cupboard and hit me on the hand. She told me I'd broken it but they would only have strapped my fingers together anyway (and told me off lots for not going in when it happened ). The thing is it is getting worse rather than better and I have stopped shifting pallets/ feed bags/ bales of hay etc. Not having ever broken anything before I don't know if this is normal. It's sore nearly all of the time now and sometimes my fingers are a bit swollen. I don't want to go back in and waste the GP's time if I'm just making a fuss over nothing. What would you recommend?

Did you have an x-ray? Where abouts did it hit your hand?

Prosecco · 23/04/2009 23:47

I would definitely go back- my gp usually tells me to go back if it doesn't improve (whatever it is)

Definitely go back to your gp. Obviously something isn't right and if you didn't have x-rays at the time, they will sort that out.
Good luck - hope you get it sorted.

I had an x-ray but (joys of living in the arse end of nowhere) it takes 10 days to get the results.

It hit my hand on the bone between the base of my index finger and my wrist.

Was it one of the carpel bones or a metacarpel?

It doesn't sound as if it's healed in the right way. You do need to go back and have a repeat x-ray. Did you go to A&E?

Clydesdaleclopper · 23/04/2009 23:57

I'm not sure which bone - I'm afraid I don't know much about anatomy. I didn't go to A&E it was an x-ray organised a few days after I saw the GP. We don't have a proper A&E locally - just a minor illness clinic.

Right. You need to go back to your GP and get another x-ray as it doesn't sound as if it's healed correctly. It should have been put in plaster or pinned depending on the break, not strapped up as this only works for certain types of finger fractures. I'd ask for a referral to a hand clinic depending on what the x-ray says. I'm shocked that you were sent away with a fracture though.
