Help - is this glandular fever, something else bad or am I just over reacting?

It all started last week on sunday. I started to come out with a rash on my tummy. By Monday this had spread up my neck, across my chest and down the top of my legs. I went to the doctors and he said it was the end of a virus and to take anti-histimines. So that's what I did.

Fast forward to this saturday night. The rash has gone by this point. My throat was starting to hurt a tiny bit on one side. By Sunday morning my throat was really hurting on one side and my ear on that side too. By Sunday afternoon I had to go back to bed because my whole throat and ears are sore, my neck is aching, my muscles are aching, it hurts to walk. Then by Sunday night my head is killing too and I get a slight rash. The rash didn't last long and since dissapeared.

On Monday morning I felt a tiny bit better...well I could get out of bed and walk. I had a long journey to make as had been staying with family and managed to make journey home. I spent the afternoon/evening on the sofa before crashing in bed. I haven't slept for longer than half an hour at one time the whole night and have finally given up. It hurts too much too swallow, my neck is still sore and now my stomach muscles are hurting too. Oh and I am quite wheezy and gasping for breath a bit.

Anyway, I am panicking a bit now as I am supposed to be back at work after the bank holiday in 3 hours and I feel like crap. Has anyone had anything like this recently? I truley have never felt so rubbish in my whole life and I am worried it is something quite serious. I was thinking maybe glandular fever or am I just being silly and if I go to the doctor they will say its a virus? If they say its a virus I think I will ring said doctors neck as I need something to help with the pain. Yesterday I was taking Ibuprofen, Benylin, gargling salt water, drinking hot drinks, drinking cold drinks and nothing at all is helping.

gasping for breath - not good.
Phone NHS Direct, or go to A&E, they will do thorough testing. Don't feel like you are wasting people's time - that is what they are they for, this is why you pay taxes, so that they can help you.
Hope you feel better soon

Thanks. I just feel like I'm being so silly. I am going to call NHS Direct now. Aarg - I hate being ill. Particularly right now when I feel like I'm doing everything possible to keep my job!

Your health is more important than your job - truly!

RoseOfTheOrient · 14/04/2009 05:54

But I hope you get to keep your job too, obv.

lol. Thank you!

I have just spoken to a lady at NHS Direct and apparently I am next in line for a call back. Problem is there system doesn't seem to let them take down all my symptoms so it will sound to a nurse like I just have a sore throat that feels swollen. Oh well, hopefully the nurse will call soon.

Well I spoke to a nurse who was lovely. She told me to keep drinking fluids (easier said than does as swallowing is near impossible) and pop to the NHS drop in centre at the local hospital at 8am. So that is what I am going to do. If they say its a virus (which they seem to say for everything), I am going to ask them why the hell they haven't invented anything that makes you feel better when you have a virus yet!!! I have lived for 25 years now - can't they have invented something already!!!

Glad you got some help - it just takes time! Viruses are nasty and v. clever - that's why we haven't invented anything to get rid of them. Each one is slightly different - so if you invent a medicine for one, it won't work for the next cold you catch. That is also why your immune system is so amazing! it can get rid of viruses etc. if you give it enough time. That is why keeping your immune system healthy and functioning is so important. Eat well, get enough sleep and don't stress. (yeah, right...)
