Really painful joints in my thumbs....

I started to have real pain in my right hand thumb especially in the mornings when I could hardly bend it. Now the same is happening in my lefthand thumb. If I move it around it becomes easier but still painful. has anyone had this or got any advice.

I think I'd be off to my GP to ask for some blood tests.

Hope everything's ok.

IWIWMC - thanks but you have got me a bit worried. Is this something you know about or is the advice just precautionary? (sp?)

This is a trick - are you trying to find out if you know me?

Flowertop - I am not making a joke honestly but do you do a lot of texting? I have heard of texter's thumb. Is there any other regular physical activity you have begun recently like lots of typing?

Not sure what else it would be but obviously if your thums are very painful or start to swell up or discolour or the pain spreads through your hand or does not go away then the GP is your first port of call.

LittleBitOfDustInMyEye - xposted with me and I can see your suggestion. Thinking back I remember getting pains in the base of my thumbs which I thought was from reeatedly picking up DS1 who was very heavy. Is that the reason it happens?

MrsMcCluskey · 14/04/2009 19:23

Gout maybe?
My mum had it in her knuckles and was very painful

Sorry LBODIME just being paranoid as would hate to be recognised in RL after some of the personal threads have written on MN. My youngest is 8 so probably doesn't apply.

ABD - No I considered that it may be due to texting but then it happened in the other thumb I kind of ruled this out. Thanks for your post.

I just asked my wife and she had it as well as me because as I said DS1 was heavy.

It does sound a lot like an RSI of some kind.

Sorry Flowertop - not meaning to worry you at all, but symmetrical joint pain can be a sign of some types of arthritis. Blood tests would be able to check to hopefully rule this out.
