blistery rash on hands and feet - so sore!

Have a rash thing on the palms of my hands and the soles of my feet. Started last night, worse as day has gone on to the point I am lying with feet up as even if they touch anything gently its sore, and to walk is really painful. Was sore earlier but since mid afternoon has got to the point where I am limping from pain.

The blisters are small, fluid filled and mainly on hands, feet hardly have any but feet much more painful - I guess because I am walking on them and so making it sorer? Feels like burning in feet, and sometimes feels tingly/numb. Hands feel tight as if swollen and hot, but I dont think they are3 swollen. Oh and both are itchy too. Doesnt look like hives in my experience.

Am on antibiotics for tonsillitis. Phoned and left message for Dr earlier to ask if it was likely because of that - she phoned back and started discussing it but couldnt get my records on screen so said she would call back later but never did. Worried about work tomorrow, if its this bad will have to get a taxi in and then hobble about all day - and its not a sitting down job!!

Any ideas?? I might crawl to the kitchen and get some ice wrapped in a towel to put on them - feels like they are on fire!

Sounds like hand foot and mouth. Viral. Nasty, but not harmful. Much sympathy

Just a guess but I recently had Hand Foot and Mouth Disease. It's only a viral infection (not as nasty as it sounds). It starts with sore throat and generaly feeling unwell. By the end of it you have a rash on hands and feet. Do you have any blisters or soreness in your mouth? I did and was diagnosed with that. Put Hand Foot and Mouth in your search engine online and it will give you the symptoms. I self diagnosed by doing that and told the Doctor what I had. It's more common in kids however they told me that maybe DD had it and passed it on (she was teething and had been to docs about a rash but they put it al down to teething and change in weather i.e. heat rash). You may have picked it up if you have been a little rund down.

Unfortunately theres nothing to do but wait it out I'm afraid. They advise Paracetamol and Ibuprofen to ease the discomfort and thats it!!

Im a nanny! Charge had a rash last week - was mainly on his hands but also on legs. Did actually look similar - he is prone to excema though so I assumed that and his mum assumed virus - they went to Drs and she said excema.

Is it possibly I didnt have tonsilitis at all this time~? (high temp and swollen tonsils) but wshen I saw dr i told her how i was prone to it and she diagnosed me in seconds - so could that be the start of HFM? Its highly infectious isnt it? I remember an outbreak on nursery placement.

It's more infectious in children. Doctor was surprised I had it and asked had I been run down or ill recently. I was a bit stressed worrying about going back to work (Monday) and was run down due to that. Most adults have an immunity to it however children don't and symptoms are worse in children (fever and obviously the blisters in mouth affect eating etc). I did think I had tonsilitis as my throat was very sore however having seen the nurse before the rash broke out was assured tonsils weren't swollen and that it was prob just viral. Next day rash arrived and doc diagnosed HFM.

Hope it isn't that as you a nanny however if it is would advise not having the children you mind. If I might add though that when the rash comes it signals the end of it therefore less likely to be contagious.

hhmm Im so unsure as tonsils definetly were swollen - they were huge - still are pretty big.

Sat with some ice on feet - was bliss. Now have sudocrem on. No idea if I am making it worse or not just know it helps the heat for a minute. They are not hot to touch, just feel burning. Im hoping sleep will help.

Thanks for all the info.

I had Hand, Foot and Mouth as an adult and it hurt like hell, I escaped the mouth blisters but the ones on my feet?.....Owwwwwwwww I could hardly walk.

luvaduck · 02/04/2009 00:09

hi
if you are on antibiotics i would worry tat its a variant of stevens johnsons syndrome.

i would stop the antib's until you see Gp

(it could be HFM but SJS more serious so stop for now)

giraffescantdancethetango · 02/04/2009 07:19

Thanks, I will phone GP today again when I get to work - I start at half8 and will have to get a taxi - Im limping walking to the bathroom even!

Theres not much to see on feet to be honest, i can feel a few bumps mainly on the side- which are very sore, i do have hard skin and am wondering if it would be possible for the bumps to be UNDER the hard skin and so i cant see them? Because its same pain as where the bumps are but just looks like hard skin!

I have a few mouth ulcers but tiny ones - and am prone to them when run down anyway. On my hands as well my thumbs are the sorest and they hardly have any bumps its more like tiny red lines - you know like when you get pen on your hand - like that but you need to looik close.

Will dose up on painkillers, phone dr from work, and luvaduck thanks I wont take my ab this morning then. Wil let you know what my mysterious ailment is later!

smudgethepuppydog Im so glad you said that - every link I see it says adults are mildly affected!!! I can hardly walk either, if somethings in the other room I think twice before getting up to get it because I need to balance out if the pains worth it. I am already on para and ibuprofen for the tonsillitis...what would the pain be like without them? anyone want to come to work with me today...the bugaboo looks quite comfy could I persuade 4yr old to push me around the house?

Surely there is a point where you have to call in sick to work??

If it is hand foot and mouth I would also be concerned you could pass it on to anyone pregnant.

It does sound awful though, you have my sympathies.

bellavitalikesthesimnellife · 02/04/2009 07:44

Foot and Mouth disease - very contagious!

giraffescantdancethetango · 02/04/2009 17:42

Mystery solved - was the antibiotics. Had a dose of piriton and its cleared up hands almost right away and feet feel better good old piriton!

Phew, am glad its resolved so easily!!

giraffescantdancethetango · 03/04/2009 22:40

Had to go to Drs today - got worse in mouth! And was worried that if it was antibiotics that mouth ulcers isnt a good sign allergy wise. Dr asked if I had contact with young children - yes! He said its hand foot and mouth and that I never had tonsillitis probably. So am glad I am not landed with a 2nd antibiotic allergy.

Tis bloody sore this though!! Have sympathy for kids who get it!

Oh, I've had this since yesterday too, it's very sore, and not helped by the fact I'm 37 weeks pregnant!

giraffescantdancethetango · 03/04/2009 23:06

Horrid isnt it. Hope it goes soon for you

OP posts:
EsmeWeatherwax · 03/04/2009 23:09

yes, horrid, my feet are really sore and really quite blistered around the toes, but in my hands its more irritation than anything, weird looking blisters too. It's rife around the nurseries here, apparently, although my dd hasn't actually had it, so not too sure how I got it!

giraffescantdancethetango · 04/04/2009 00:02

My toes are worst too. My hands had a bizzare pattern thing on them, fading now. Feet are worst. Looking at your profile you seem close to me haha. Perhpas I gave you it
