Is it ok to have sex the same day as having a smear??

Im having a smear tomorrow but DP has been away for a week and back in the evening.. Just wondered...

It's fine to have sex after a smear, bu best to avoid having sex for 24 hours before a smear, as there would still be semen up there which can make the cells difficult to see in the lab; the sperm and semen cells can obscure the cervical cells they are trying to see.

But if you have the smear first then you can go for it!

And yes we can see the sperm and indeed I have seen spermatozoa on the cervical samples in the lab. I guess the little blighters hang around for a fair while
