Can my mum be left alone for 8 hrs - 2 weeks post-op?

She had a very big (imo) op on Tuesday 10th

She had an aorta & femoral artery bypass & came out of hospital on Friday

On Tuesday my dad has to go away (work ) & needs to leave at about 8am, & my aunty who is coming to help out can't get there until about 4pm

My DH can pop in twice in the morning about 9:30 & 11 (ish)

So can I go to work or should I take the day off

She seems OK - can have a shower by herself & wash her hair - but she keeps dropping off to sleep all the time

It's early days in terms of her recovery. She will be a lot different by then (hopefully a lot stronger and a lot less sleepy). I think I'd book the day off just in case and see how things go. You can always cancel the day off.

I guess

Oh poop - it is so complicated taking time off

can she get to the toilet by herself?

KatyMac · 22/03/2009 21:58

Yes & she lives in a bungalow so (thankfully) no stairs

Dh could pop in again about 2 maybe?

I think if she is mobile and you are not to worried about her falling then should be fine. 14 days is quite a long time, and if she needed to be attended constantly then they surely wouldnt have discharged her or arranged for some sort of homecare.

out of interest what does she think?

KatyMac · 22/03/2009 22:05

Oh that we are fussing and we should 'FGS leave her alone & stop fussing'

It's just she has feet of scars and it all looks very angry still

Does she have friends nearby who could pop in aswell as your DH's visits?

ickletickle · 22/03/2009 22:12

well, i would say you were ok. its quite a bit step for both of you, hope it goes ok.

KatyMac · 22/03/2009 22:12

I'm not sure

I'll check with my dad again

I said t book a carer to come in - but she is being a bit funny aboutthe idea

Could you ask the district nurses to come and visit her?

blowninonabreeze · 23/03/2009 19:37

You may well be surprised. Is she pretty mobile and independent normally.

In a former life I used to work in this field and was always amazed at how quickly people recovered from what I considered major surgery.

Esp if your DH will be popping in - and I assume she'll have some sort of mobile phone next to her?

KatyMac · 23/03/2009 19:44

Well she did today - my dad was there but didn't do her drinks or anything & she seems fine

We are going to chance it
