What is this stomach bug and how can I get rid of it?

I have had a stomach bug since Thursday night. No vomiting, just upset stomach and diarhea and not feeling right. Friday I didn;t eat all day as I had to be out and about and didn't want to make things worse. In the evening I felt ok so had rice. This morning I had diarhea again. So I ate light again today (again had to be out all day) and felt better so this evening had dinner. I have spent the rest of the evening in and out of the toilet with diarhea again.

It is really getting me down now and I feel quite worn out. What on earth is it and how can I make it go? And please don't tell me not to eat anything as we are going out for mother's day lunch tomorow to Strada and we never eat out anymore for financial reasons and I was looking forward to it!

I STILL have this today. No thoughts anyone? I am beginning to wonder if it is infact a stomach bug at all as the rest of the family are fine.

My Dad had the same thing a couple of weeks back. His lasted nearly 2 weeks!! Doctor did some tests but nothing came back positive, it just seemed to go away on it's own. No-one else seemed to suffer with it either.

2 weeks!! I am not sure I can handle it that long!

Are you bloated? MIght be worth popping along to GP to make sure you are hydrated enough, check out if he/she can give you anything/what it might be - 4 days is a long time IMO to be having runny poo.

for bugs parasites viruses i take grape fruit seed extract, as does my son aged 6
from all good health food stores
about £5.00 a small bottle higher nature
one drop a day in something like milk or yoguronly to be taken whilst ill and occasionally if starting to feel unwell
we did not get any colds viruses sickness etc., this winter

pushkar · 22/03/2009 20:26

But can a doctor really do anything for a stomach bug?

I do drink a lot, but recently because of feeling unwell, I have been drinking mostly sparkling water instead of still. I wonder if that has something to do with it?

I am resurecting this in the hope of more advice. I am STILL ill and it is the oddest bug ever. The other night I had a fever and flu like symptoms, but my stomach was better. Today I generally felt better overall but quite drained. But this evening, the diarhea is back with a vengance and I feel terribly fluey again. What on earth do I do to get rid of this??? And also, what do I eat? WHen I feel better, I eat and then the symptoms return.

Please someone help! My mum keeps saying go to the GP, but what can they actually do?

Poor you. A friend of mine had this kind of thing, went on for at least 10 days with quite violent diarrhoea, but otherwise feeling mostly ok (occasionally achey). Turned out to be food poisoning, and she took antibiotics. It IS worth giving a stool sample to the GP for testing, if its going on this long - campylobacter can go on and on sometimes (dh had it, from eating undercooked chicken) and need ABs to clear up, as can salmonella (which my friend had).

That said, my neighbour had identical thing which she just stayed in bed and drank lots of water for, it lasted just over a week - she recovered fast once it stopped.

Hope you feel better v soon!

IlanaK · 24/03/2009 21:17

I did wonder about food poisoning but I decided it couldn't be as I hoem cook all meals which means that we all eat the same food. And no-one else is ill. I haven't eaten out or anything different than the rest of the family.

I would love to be able to stay in and rest - I would imagine i would get better quicker. Not a chance though.

I am going to the GP for a totally unrelated routine appointment for one of the kids tomorow. I may ask if they can squeeze me in as well. I am not overly keen on the idea of a stool sample though

Good luck

I don't think anyone in my friend's house got it either, in fact I know they didn't - she dismissed food poisoning for same reason, but must have eaten that particular bit of chicken that had it, iyswim. I would be brave and do the stool thang...will think of you, am probably going to go to GP in morning too, re unrelated thing and fever/cough I can't shake!

IlanaK · 24/03/2009 22:16

Interesting. Maybe it is food poisoning then. Well, I will ask at the GP tomorow if they can squeeze me in. Strangely, I have also developed a terrible chesty cough thing at the same time. I feel like I am falling apart!

good luck at the docs today

Elibean · 25/03/2009 11:45

How'd it go, Ilana?

I also have the chesty cough, fever all night and feel like poo (to quote dd1). Just a virus, so far, so nothing for it but paracetamol and keep going.

Hope you got your cough checked at the same time as the other end, iyswim, for good measure..

Thanks for enquiring everyone. I saw the GP yesterday and she said it was unlikely to be a bug as no-one in my family had it. She thinks it was some sort of digestive upset (non-specific) that has caused continued problems with my stomach. She has put me on a constipating diet: white bread, white pasta, white rice and potatoes. No fruit or veg. Plain chicken. that's it. She says I need to slow my digestion right down and give it time to recover. Then I can slowly add normal food back in. So, I have done that since yesterday and I have had no more diahrea, but no poo or any kind now

I should have got her to check the cough at the same time, but i didn't. I have now lost my voice completely and cough up lovely green stuff in the morning - yuck.

Oh well, maybe this is it for me for the rest of the year and I will be really well
