can a smear possibly cause a mc?

Hi blondes, they made my friend do a pg test before hers, so maybe that means they'd prefer you not have smear, it is scraping your cervix, Wait a couple of weeks

Mummyfor3 · 19/03/2009 10:29

Yes, it is safe. No, it will not trigger a MC.
However, most smear takers will prefer to delay a smear until after delivery unless there is a pressing medical reason why a smear must be done now. The delay is simply to avoid blaming the smear should a MC occur which of course could happen anyway, IYKWIM?

Do you feel you need to have smear now? How long ago was your last one? And how pregnant are you?
Gosh, I am presuming an awful lot of things, from your simple question, sorry!

yellowflowers · 19/03/2009 10:29

I had smear this week and am ttc and nurse said no problem at all even if I had conceived in last couple of days - don;t know if you already have an established pregnancy though

Blondeshavemorefun · 19/03/2009 10:30

waves to plum

thanks honey - will pass that on to my friend

I am always nagging her to have a smear - she knows about my history ( i have have had many dodgy cells.lasers.biopsys and have a smear every 6mths} and she still hasnt gone

but now she thinks she may be pregnant - and thats sent her into a panic that she might not have a smear for now 9/10mths and then is panicing that she may get cancer cells

so does that mean its safe after 3/4mths?

I went for one the weekend before I got pregnant and the result came back that I needed retesting (not because they had found anything wrong or anything) but by that time I was pregnant and so asked the midwife who told me not to go until after the baby had been born. Didn't say why though.

Blondeshavemorefun · 19/03/2009 17:25

ahhhhhhhhhhh

so it is worth the risk of having a smear and maybe having a mc

or

waiting till after giving birth and then maybe having pre cancerous cells?

OP posts:
Mummyfor3 · 19/03/2009 22:15

The smear will NOT cause a MC, but if she were having a MC would she always blame it on the smear?
Is there any pressing reason why she must have a smear NOW? Ie bleeding after intercourse?
Smears are a screening test, and a screening test only. They do not detect all malignant changes. In fact, what we hope to pick up are all the many inflammatory and mildly abnormal changes that come before invasive cancer of the cervix.
How long has your friend not had a smear for? If it is @ 5 years, there is prob nothing to be gained by having it done now. Also, bear in mind, pregnancy only lasts 9 months, so she can easily have one done post-natally.
HTH .

Blondeshavemorefun · 20/03/2009 09:07

mummyfor3 - she hasnt had one for over 3 years hence my nagging

she is/was bleeding during sex and because of what happened to me, she is burying her head in the sand

tbh she prob is ok, but obv there is always that risk she might not be

and yes i think if she did have a mc she would blmae the smear

OP posts:
brettgirl2 · 20/03/2009 09:44

If she is worried specifically about funny bleeding then she needs to go and see a doctor.

Blondeshavemorefun · 20/03/2009 12:31

i know brettgirl

i have told her many times - she just didnt listen [hhm]

and now after all the jade hype over smears etc, think she is panicing
