HELP! I had a tooth out yesterday but should I still be in agony?

I had a bottom molar out yesterday, 8.30AM, which was severely infected. Before the extraction I had to have two lots of antibiotics. Apparently the pathogens caused by the infection led to bone loss .

This tooth had root canal treatment about ten years ago.
Anyway, the post extraction care leaflet they gave me says I should feel nothing except perhaps a dull ache by now. This is more than a dull ache and the hole in my gum is yellow, grey and swollen.

Am I right to be worried and what should I do?

Mine was like this after a lower molar with root canal.

Ended up back at dentist for antibiotics and within 24hrs of taking them it was so much better.

Go back to your dentist. It sounds like another infection. It should still be red/brown as a clot would have formed in the space.

Poor you! Take some painkillers.

clots are really weird colours not just red. mine was yellowy then white. if it was really infected abs will still be healing. takes time

I think you shouldn't be in severe pain after an extraction - sore, bit of pain maybe for severe pain probably means infection, dry socket maybe? Get yourself back down there tomorrow and don't take no for an answer. Also, if it's bad bad bad, ring your out of hours doctor and they will be able to put you onto an out of hours dentist. Some A&E departments have them I think.

Spidermama · 17/03/2009 20:21

Thanks. I think there is a blood clot in the socket. (Blacky red) It's more the surrounding bit which is painful and yellow.

I'm worried about the bone loss thing. It sounds scarey and I wonder is further bone loss occuring now that the infection seems to be raging again?

I'll give them a ring tomorrow and perhaps start on round three with the antibiotics.

i have the bone loss thing too, dentist is always telling me have to see a hygienist alot.

Spidermama · 17/03/2009 20:30

Scarey isn't it SEA?

Herbietea thanks. Do you reckon it's infected then, as it's yellow and swollen? Is that usual after two courses of ABs back to back? What are the chances a third lot will sort it out?

Nurofen is kicking in now, thank God!

It was indeed a dry socket. Ouch! The dentist has dressed it but says it'll be 2-3 weeks before the pain stops.

The pain has really died down since the dressing and yet she told me it really wouldn't help much. Does this mean the dressing will wear off?

I've got me a bumper pack of ibuprofen.
