It's at the top of my thigh, in the groin area but the pain sort of shoots down my leg when I try and move it or walk

I am not a sportswoman

Nor have any sexual gymnastics been involved

What can it be?!

I had a DVT recently. It was hot, red and swollen and painful on standing. Didn't feel muscular at all. Hope this puts your mind at rest.

Sciatica can cause pain to shoot down leg - have a Google on that!

notnowbernard · 16/03/2009 21:21

Nigglewiggle thankyou v much

I kind of know it's not a DVT (no symptoms like you describe) and believe it or not (hard by these posts I know) I do work in the healthcare field (not general medicine though)

But I do let my thoughts run away a bit and start imagining the worst etc. But then I give myself a bit of a slap and order is restored kind of, anyway...

trapped nerve?

Is the upper part insde the thigh. Blokes call it a groin strain - happens a lot in football/rugby. If so, you probably just pulled your adductor muscle.

My suggestion is go the chemist and get an elasticated bandage to slip over your foot and pull up as high as possible up your leg into the top of the thigh as close to the groin as possible.

Disclaimer: Then go to the doctor and have it checked out properly.

notnowbernard · 16/03/2009 21:25

I Googled sciatica and it didn't really fit

Googled groin strain too and lots of talk of rugby/football and adductor muscles (Abetadad you know your stuff, clearly)

Believe me, I do not indulge in activity likely to pull an adductor muscle! But will give the bandage a go, thankyou

bernard, I've had a groin strain for weeks now.

I did it while swimming the breast stroke! Thought swimming was meant to be good for me, but never mind. It was the "froggy" action with my legs that did it.

I didn't put that much effort into it, and the doctor said that just slightly twisting it the wrong way can result in a groin strain. So you may not have had to indulge in strenuous activities to have hurt yourself.

Hope you feel better soon.

notnowbernard · 16/03/2009 21:54

girlandboy - sorry to hear that

And thanks to all who have --indulged me replied to this thread

Will wait and see what happens over the net couple of days and go to GP if no improvement

If any of your DH/DP get a 'groin strain' you should of course .... laugh your heads off.
