Dd2 has a hacking continues cough which reminds me of when i had whooping cough as a child. She has had her vacsinations but not her booster (yet). Please tell me that its not possible?

How can i stop the poor little thing coughing?

Could it be tonsilitis?

It is possible. If the cough sounds like a seal's bark it could be croup. It just a very bad normal cough. Take her to the GP for a diagnosis.

Also a steamy bathroom (with the shower on) should help.

Definitely possible. The vast majority of whooping cough is in vaccinated children/adults - it's not a very effective vaccine.

She has been unwell all week, the cough started at night times only but today it has been non-stop and very dry (almost croup like). I feel so sorry for her as it must be painful, i have never heard a child cough this much .

I have phoned her GP who gave us advice over the phone, they said it sounded like a croup type of cough and to give plenty of fluids. I was told to phone back if she gets worse or has trouble breathing.
