hello

i went for a smear test on friday and the nurse said she could not find my cervix the first time the second time she did. i had some other tests done as i had white discharge. i received a letter yesterday saying that i have thrush and that i need to make an appointment to see a doctor regarding the appearance of the cervix - thats all it said. i rang the doctors and have made an appointment which is not until the week after next. I am just a bit worried what could it be? i have 2 c sections. can't stop thinking about it. any advice? good websites to look at? thank you!!

ok when was your last smear before this one ? if it was three years ago and fine ,i really wouldnt panic as cervical cancer or the most commen form takes a very long time to develop . Im a bit concerned the nurse couldnt find it ? are you sure thats what she said ? cervixs can be tricky things in some people ,although i have been told mine is very compliant. Have you had any breakthrough bleeding ,painful intercourse etc ? If you have a thrush infection ,it may have made your cervix look inflammed ,they are probably erring on the side of caution, plus you need treatment for your thrush. Or it may be that the nurse found it difficult to collect a good enough sample and has asked the dr to have another go . Sorry for the ramble ,im sure you will be fine

last smear was about 5 years old. the nurse said at first she could not find it and she had to take out the plastic instrument and put it back in and move it around and then she found it. no breakthrough bleeding. . sex was a bit uncomfortable one day . she took a sample for the smear as i remember there being a bit of blood on the swab and she said that is from scratching the cervix that happens.

I don't know what your surgery is like, but I'm pretty sure that if I called mine and said I was beside myself with worry they would find an earlier appt. 2 weeks is an awfully long wait.

I think if it was anything that looked really sinister they would have made sure you got an appt more quickly. Docs can move fast when they want/need to

That said, for your own peace of mind can you not get an "emergency" appt (when you phone up and they get you an appt that day)?

Could be something really mundane like a cervical erosion (v common - I had it), or probably any number of other minor cervical afflictions. Good luck!

Well, whatever is odd about your cervix, it can't be related to the actual smear test result as it was only done on Friday and smear test results take at least 4 weeks to come back, generally. From the wording (ie talking about the "appearance" of your cervix rather than other test results), it sounds as though when the nurse visualised your cervix for the smear, she saw something she wanted a doctor to check up on, because she was unqualified to pass an opinion on it herself - eg for all she knew, it could have been a completely normal phenomenon. I would second the advice that you try to find out whether you can get an earlier appointment, given the anxiety it is causing, or ask to speak to the writer of the letter on the telephone, so that they can clarify what they actually meant, so as to put your mind at rest/let you know what you are actually being asked to be reseen about.
