2 year old DS wakes screaming at night and has fever -help!

I'm a bit baffled by what's going on with my 2 year old DS. He's always been a great night time sleeper and has napped for an hour every day for the last 18 months (never needed much in the day).

For the last couple of weeks he has been waking up at night sobbing and demanding his daddy. The last two nights it's been every half hour or so. He's also been difficult to get down at night and is currently screaming upstairs in his cot and asking for a million different things to avoid sleeping even tho he must be exhausted from two nights of no sleep. He's had blazing temperatures at night and was sent home from nursery yesterday with a 39 deg temp that came on after his nap. In himself he seems fine though he's been complaining of an itchy head and itch legs (no spots tho).

Am totally baffled and not sure how to handle it -please help!

have you checked for worms? I'm just taking the 'itching' and putting it together with the 'night time'. Might be worth checking his bottom tonight. Sorry, I can't come up with anything else as I have worms on my mind just now. DS has got them AGAIN .

Hope you get your DS better, whatever is ailing him.

If his temperature is that high at night he is probably delirious. He must have an infection of some kind to be getting a temp like this-suggest you take him to GP to establish the cause if not evident. (might be ear or urine infection, for example)

thanks Tiggiwinkle -the strange thing is he's absolutely fine during the day -I'm going to see how we go tonight

That is a very high temp poor lad, fevers do tend to go down a bit but not disappear completely during the day so even if it seems like he is OK, if the fever is recurrent he is definately not alright.

I think you need to go to the GP asap. You say he has been like this for 2 weeks?!

ds6 get's high temp at night only. Generally when he is run down. The temp goes so high that he hallucinates and is screaming. Last time he thought that his hand had been cut off, previously he's seen spiders on the walls. The thing is that his eyes are open but glazed and you can tell that he's just not with you. He never remembers anything in the morning.
As the others have said high temp is usually underlying infection. In ds case it generally tonsillitis or ear infection - he ends up having antibiotics and is fine after that.
