My mum has thrush. She is convinced it's caused by paracetamol

She had antibiotics a while ago and was given a course of Canesten Duo to take. That was about 5/6 weeks ago. She was on the phone today and said she had it agian this mroning and that it started up after taking 2 lots of paracetamol yesterday.
now I'm not an expert, but to my knowledge paracetam9ol doesn't cause thrush.
I said that a low immune system can cause it, or diabetes. She is adamant its the paracetamol though

What's the paracetamol for?

Saltire · 04/03/2009 17:40

She took 4 yesterday (not all at the same time) because she had a headache, then woke up this morning with thrush.

more likely it was the ABs or being run down than paracetomal

DumbledoresGirl · 04/03/2009 17:42

I would say it was the ABs but 5/6 weeks ago seems a bit too long ago.

Not prying, but if she had ABs a few weeks ago, she must have had something wrong with her. I would go along with her immune system being compromised.

Saltire · 04/03/2009 17:43

I did wonder if she was run down, she has not been 100% for a while, or so she says, I haven't seem her since october. She had a fluey thing, adn has been complaining of a bad back, and tiredness. Igot her some multivits but she said she felt sick after taking them

ABs are a classic cause of thrush - I don't think I've ever taken them without having a subsequent attack.
And, ime, it can 'brew' (yuk) for a while.

snoflinga · 10/03/2009 19:59

ABs likely cause as destroy bodys good bacteria as well as bad.Can recurr if not treated for long enough. Need to carry on applying cream for a few days after symptoms cleared up.If consistently reccurs get urine sample tested at Gps for diabetes + may need AB course every 6 weeks.

Cotton underwear, avoiding douching (kills good bacteria) and avoiding sugar in diet can help (yeast infection feeds on sugar).Good luck

Paracetamol can't cause thrush.

summer111 · 10/03/2009 20:23

AB's and hormones - lethal combination for causing thrush!

liath · 10/03/2009 20:28

If she's feeling tired & run down and keeps getting thrush she should probably get tested for diabetes.

fakeblondie · 12/03/2009 13:14

Absolutely cannot get thrush from paracetamol.

luvaduck · 12/03/2009 13:24

its from the antib's - thrush can lurk for a while before becoming clinically apparent

NOT from paracetomol
