I mean, if I cooked something with onions, mushrooms and peppers, would that be three portions or would it be just one because by the time I've dished it up there's not so much there for each person?

And if dd2 has cornflakes with banana, grapes and slices of pear in it, is that three or just one because there's only so much fruit you can fit in a child's cereal bowl (with cornflakes)?

I think that a handful is meant to be a good guage of a portion size, so a child's portion size is clearly going to be smaller than an adult's portion size.

think it probably only counts as 1 ... as lindenlass says a portion is meant to be the size of your fist! One juice counts per day and only one portion of a fruit or veg ie. you cant just have 2 apples and call it 2 portions .. they all have to be different.

Basic guidance on what constitutes a portion of fruit and veg here and you can download more detailed information by following the link at the very bottom of the page

it is only dried fruit and fruit juice that cannot be counted as more than one portion. If you have 2 apples then of course that wouild count as 2 portions. Ideally you would have 5 different ones but they dont have to be.
