Is it even possible to breastfeed on microgynon30? Doc said it would finish all of my milk production, but ds is 11 months and I am wondering whether i may be able to keep a night and morning feed going??

Some hormones get through to ds will this be a problem? Only the combined pill sorts out my af and as it returned yesterday for the first time I am now being forced into sorting out feeding ds and whether maybe to stop b'fing him. I have painful and very heavy af's without being on this pill, and with looming holidays i dont want to try someting new.

I personally wouldn't continue breastfeeding while on the combined pill, as medical advice is that you shouldn't do this. Whether the advice is solely because the combined pill will reduce your milk supply (a problem that will be exacerbated by cutting back on the number of feeds you do) or because the level of hormones getting through from the pill to your breast milk is considered too high, I don't know. You should go back and speak to your doctor about that before you decide anything - or to an NCT or La Leche League breastfeeding counsellor.

Hi Papaya
Check Kellymom. Advice there is that you can try if DC is over 6mo BUT it may affect or even dry up your supply. I've just started taking combined pill (Mercilon) again for AF reasons, like you - DS2 is 9months and I bf him night and morning, though we were established in this pattern b4 I went back on the pill. Mercilon is the one with the lowest oestrogen dose, which is why dr recommended it. Have tried 3 types of mini-pill but got extremely anxious/depressed so progesterone-only contraception is not an option for me. Am only on 1st pack so will let you know how I get on.

thanks for that zammummy, feel slightly re-assured that it says ok to use after 6 months and it seems to be more realted to a reduction in milk as opposed to hormones getting to the baby. Good to know I am not alone in this! May post link in breastfeeding thread too
