Feel like such a baby to be whinging about it, but it HURTS! What could it be? Is it just an odd sore throat? It doesn't really hurt when I swallow, more when I open my jaw or move or tongue.

I'm pg so I'm trying to take the min painkillers possible, but I've had some paracetamol.

Ow.

Get some Difflam spray from the chemist (I'd check it's OK with being pg - but I am fairly sure it's OK)

It is probably an ulser/ulsa (sp??) at the base of your tongue - I have one atm & at my checkup today the dentist said it was enormous

southeastastra · 18/02/2009 21:11

i have a massive ulcer under my tongue atm, it's awful had sore throat too. maybe it's a virus going around?

KatyMac · 18/02/2009 21:12

I had an awful sore throat too & the dingle-dangle bit was covered in ulsas too

I wonder if it is a virus

SobranieCocktail · 18/02/2009 21:13

Hmm, I'm pretty sure it's not an ulcer. It feels more like a mahoosive bruise. Maybe it's tongue strain! Nah.

It's really eye-wateringly sore...it's actually making that side of my face tingly.

I am dying

Poor you

Is you gland swollen too?

You may have to go & see the GP - tongue strain is very serious & get it checked out

ExtraFancy · 18/02/2009 21:28

I've got this too! Just finished a course of antibiotics for tonsillitis, and this morning my tongue felt really sore on one side.

Over the course of the day it has got worse, and now one side of my face/tongue/jaw is all hot and painful

I hope it is just a virus and not the tonsillitis rising undefeated by the ABs!

Thanks KatyMac

Oh ExtraFancy, let's hold hands and feel pooooorly together.

Seriously though - an ulsa on the back underneath of your tongue will hurt with almost every breath you take - as the ligaments (& stuff) are all connected so moving your head/tongue/jaw will aggravate it

If it is on the surface (eg a cut or an ulsa) then gargling with hot salty water will help (although it will hurt at the time) - if that doesn't help then it is not a surface injury

Do you know, I have a horrible feeling it may be wisdom tooth related. I've had a good poke all around the sore area and it's tender at the very back of my gum....low down, not around the gum surface iykwim.

Oh dear.

And I'm not registered with an NHS dentist yet....Grrr.

Oh dear

I've had pain under my tongue before, but on one side.

This turned out to be a blocked salivary gland/duct. It really hurt and felt a bit swollen and hard.

Eventually the pain got worse, but then there was a rush of saliva in my mouth and it had apparently unblocked itself. It's done it a few times, always on the same side.

SobranieCocktail · 20/02/2009 08:11

Trying not to get my hopes up, but I think it's beginning to feel better!

GirlandBoy - that's interesting! DH had a huge blocked saliva gland under his tongue before. It was at the front. I remember we were on a long journey in the car, and I could tell somethng was on his mind. He said "I think I've got some sort of growth under my tongue". Oooh says I, worriedly, let;s see! He lifted up his tongue and I almost passed out as this HUGE ballon type thing bulged out like a frog;s throat. I nearly crashed the car!
