Hormones all over the place

My hormones/ periods have always been a law unto themselves - for years I have only had 3 periods a year. The last 6 months I seem to be having a mini period about every 2 weeks, it is only v light, lasts a couple of days, but is accompanied by horrendous PMT during which time i feel seriously depressed and want to divorce my husband
Has anyone else had similar experience? I know I need to go and see my GP but wouldnit mind having some idea what is going on.
My mum reckons i need progesterone tablets - anyone been presribed these in similar circumstances? Did it work? The oddly spaced periods are a pain but the PMT is the absolute pits

My hormone levels were all wrong which meant that I wasn't ovulating. I started having acupuncture and after 3 months, all my hormone levels were normal.

It might be worth googling acupunture and hormone levels to see what you can find out.

Do seek medical advice from your GP in the first instance.

Irregular periods are often caused by hormonal imbalances - in this regard a condition called polycystic ovaries is a common culprit. That can cause a lack of periods. Another possible cause is thyroid imbalance which again can cause such problems. Both of these should be looked for by the GP via blood tests.

Progesterone tablets are but a short term and temporary measure; you need to find out WHY this is happening in the first place.

Thanks. I have been tested for PCOS previously when I was struggling to concieve (came off the pill and did not have a period for 12 months) but it was negative. Having said that I dont think my hormones have ever been right. Did not start periods until 16 and since then have always had v irregular ones apart from when i was on the pill..

I never feel that I get very good care from my GP - always feel really fobbed off. But I will make an appointment and see what happens...

Acupuncture appeals - have heard lots of good things about it, can I ask if you had it in conjunction with advice from GP Littlefish or did you skip the trad medical route completely?

The GP didn't really offer me any advice - just referred us to the Assisted Conception unit as dh also had fertility issues. I did the acupuncture thing on my own as I'd heard good things about it from a friend.

I've found it great for my general well-being as well as the hormonal stuff. I still go once a month, five years after I first started going.
